Longrow 21 Year (2020 Release)
Single Malt — Campbeltown, Scotland
Reviewed
November 27, 2020 (edited February 22, 2022)
(Good Spirits Co. Glasgow – Virtual Premium Whisky Tasting, 27 November 2020).
1 of 3600 bottles
Nose: Rich, toffee, sweet smoke, meaty/BBQ (?), coastal/brine
Palate: Dried dark fruit (prunes), herbal (coriander), nutty, light/sweet peat, musty/sulphur. There is a recognisable ‘Campbeltown funk’ that is common for anything produced by Springbank distillery.
Finish: Very smooth, velvety mouthfeel. Slightly citrus/ sour, light sweet smoke.
This whisky seems to come in waves. I moved from ‘I really like this!’ to ‘Ewww – sulphur, mushroom, dank’ and back again from sip to sip. It’s weird. I don’t love it, but it is wonderfully interesting! It has so many layers – some great, some less so, but it is a beautifully complex and well balanced dram.
Came joint second of the six whiskies, with 17% (4) of the final vote for favourite of the night. (78% of those present said they enjoyed the whisky).

@WhiskeyLonghorn while I also love the Uigeadail for the peat & sherry combo I even prefer the Kilchoman Loch Gorm. Honorable mentions: Glendronach Traditionally Peated (and sometimes soon Arran)
@PBMichiganWolverine @Scott_E I can't say I ever got to try one of the older Uigis, but the recent ones I've tried have been very good and great VFM. Been meaning to get an updated tasting out, but alas no time.
SB18 being called sherried is odd...I mean there is SOME sherry but minimal at best.
@WhiskeyLonghorn Springbank 15 or 18 and either Glengoyne 25 or more realistically Glendronach 15 or 21 would do me nicely. The SB 18 and old version Glendronach 15 i still have remnants of...:-)
@WhiskeyLonghorn In fantasy-land it would be the Lagavulin 200th anniversary 25 year old or the SMWS 27.112 Springbank 21 year old. Back in reality I'd say Benromach 15 or Springbank 12.
@PBMichiganWolverine. I haven’t had the “newer” and still have that first bottle. Was great (lost its luster now). Next experiment post COVID (amongst other items). We shall get together.
@Scott_E although I hear the new Uigi’s from the last few years aren’t the same as from before. I’ve not had one in ages , would be good to re-try
@PBMichiganWolverine agreed. Ardbeg Ugi
@WhiskeyLonghorn affordable : Ardbeg Uigi. My favorite: Laphroaig single Oloroso sherry cask 21 yr TWE
@WhiskeyLonghorn Lagavulin 25 or the 2015 24 year release lol. But I mean in general it would be if light peat, something HP (21, 25, 30 year), bit more peat springbank 21, a bit more perhaps an IB caol ila at CS exlcuslively aged in SECOND fill barrels. Or my favorite peat for the money, while staying in the "best" of range, a good laphriag 25 such as the 2017 which had a nice bit of sherry on it.
@cascode @dhsilv2 and anybody else out there, if you could only have one bottle of peat + sherry bomb, what would you buy?
@icsteel154 if it was the 2020 release it was bottled 20/10/20. This it being the 2020 and not 2019 release :) You however have exact information for the 2019 release on casks, bottles, and bottlin date. Thus my question.
@dhsilv2 It was definitely the 2020 release. The people running the tasting gave me the barrel split, but I’ll amend my review accordingly. Thanks...
Was this the 2019 or 2020? You've posted it under the 2020 release which was 95% sherry and 5% bourbon
What an interesting array of whiskies in the virtual tasting! Thanks for sharing your notes.
