Nose - Butterscotch, toffee, nutmeg, clove, orange rind, leather, medium oak and ethanol.
Palate - Butterscotch candy, chocolate covered caramel, orange blossom honey, rye spice, oak. Medium finish with dense syrupy flavors mixed with rye spices and oak.
This is the best rye I've had to date. It hits all the right notes of a barely legal rye and surpasses Pikesville, Knob Creek Single Barrel Rye, and WT Rare Breed Rye with its richness of more syrupy notes common in higher abv barrel proof bourbons. The difference between this and those other awesome rye whiskeys is less astringency and tannins from rye and oak. I think the barrel entry proof of 100 and the estimated youthful age of ~4 years have a lot to do with this, considering the rye content is only 56% here. It's honestly a phenomenal whiskey and I'm on the lookout for anything Wilderness Trail. Fantastic bottle too, beefy synthetic cork and rectangular shape are perfect for reusing as a decanter or infinity bottle.
