Ritual Zero Proof Tequila Alternative

Non-Alcoholic Spirits — USA

Reviewed December 23, 2020 (edited December 24, 2020)

1.5 out of 5 stars
After a relatively favorable experience with Ritual 0% ABV whiskey ( provided you mix it and not have it neat), I decided to try their 0% ABV tequila. So, again...this isn’t meant to replace the real thing, but meant as an alternative...sort of like saying “ I can’t have a BMW, so I’ll drive a scooter instead “. Totally different class, and really can’t be compared or shouldn’t be compared. Only thing similar is that they both have wheels. There’s no way you can have this neat or with ice. You need to mix it. I followed one of the recipes and used a 1:1 proportion of orange juice to this, a spoon of agave no calorie sweetener, a few dashes of lime juice, and topped with plenty of ice. It’s actually not bad. Good enough for me to make seconds. Doesn’t taste like tequila...but instead has a herbal taste with a jalapeño burn in the throat...which is why you need a spoon of sweetener to calm it out. Would I have it again? Yes...but at $26/bottle, it’s not worth it. Instead just have the orange juice. With or w/o lime.

@Soba45 I think @cascode has a point. I took his suggestion and took a really low ABV approach. I combined this 0 ABV tequila in a 1-1 proportion with vermouth, a few drops of lime juice, and a spoon of zero calorie agave sweetener. Turned out really good, with barely 4-5% ABV

@cascode Ah no I hadn't. After my hopefully dryish jan I'll investigate further :-)

@Soba45 I know you’re trying to go sort-of dry but have you tried investigating aperitivos and spritzes mixed with non-alcoholic things? We picked up a German de-alcoholised sparkling white recently and with Aperol or Lillet over ice and soda it made an excellent spritz that probably measured no more than 4-5% but was packed with flavour.

@Soba45 don’t get me wrong...they’re decent, just not worth the price. For $26, I might as well have bought a bunch of orange juice, lime juice, and agave sweetener...add a bit of jalepeno, and I’d be 90% there

Ah it's not filling me with hope for the two bottles i ordered. Monday Gin and Warner Edwards Double Juniper. I spent more in shipping than the bottles cost. Yeah to date i've been i might as well just drink straight tonic but we'll see!

@cascode totally agree——if I’m going to have a non-alcoholic drink, I’m going to stick with something else than these—-overpriced, and not so good.

It does not sound particularly attractive. I’ve not had any of these 0% abv “spirits” that have made me want to buy a bottle. Not that I don’t like the idea but there are so many better tasting non-alcoholic things to enjoy when I don’t feel like booze. Soda water over ice with a squeeze of lime juice and a barspoon of grenadine is delicious and way cheaper.

@ContemplativeFox not sure this would be indicative of US made agave. I think it’s being alcohol free.

I've been hoping that US agave will take off, but experiences like this don't give me a lot of hope.
