2021 Mother’s Day Gift Guide

May 8, 2021

For those of us here in the US and in many other countries around the world, the second Sunday in May marks the day to celebrate mom. Although some parts of the country are seeing some families reunite after many months apart, some others will be celebrating the holiday distantly. But whether you are able to see mom in person this year, or will have to say your hellos over Zoom or Facetime, we can all agree that mom deserves a gift that will be put to good use.

So if you’re looking for something that will compliment that bouquet of flowers you made sure to order well in advance (hint, hint), we’ve got a few ideas. We’ve sorted through all of the spirits released over the past year and picked a few of our favorites. These bottles have both style and substance, just like mom, and are each sure to please. Read on to see which products have our seal of approval in our Mother’s Day Gift Guide below.

For the Moms Who Like Mixing Drinks:

Citadelle Jardin d’ete Gin

Citadelle Jardin d’été is a new permanent addition to the Citadelle gin lineup as of April 2021. It is inspired by the garden of Château de Bonbonnet in Ars, France, which is a passion project of Debbie Gabriel, wife of Master Distiller Alexandre Gabriel. The gin includes Charentais melon, whole lemon, yuzu zest and orange peel along with the 19 other botanicals that are used in the standard Citadelle Gin expression. It carries an SRP of $24.99.

Mijenta Blanco Tequila

Mijenta Tequila as a brand launched in the US in August 2020. Its flagship spirit is made by Maestra Tequilera Ana Maria Romero from ripe agaves harvested in the Highlands of Jalisco. Notably, all of the paper-related products for the bottle and box are made from agave waste. Mijenta is inspired by “mi gente” which means “my people.” This blanco expression is unaged and bottled at 40% ABV with an SRP of $50.

For the Moms Who Like Whiskey:

Coalition Rye Sauternes

Coalition Rye Sauternes Barriques Finish is made from a 100% rye mash bill (both malted and unmalted rye). The rye is sourced from Waldeck Farms which is located just a mile from Kentucky Artisan Distillery where it is distilled in copper pot stills. The straight rye whiskey is aged for five years in oak barrels before it is finished for up to 9 months in Sauternes sweet white wine barriques. It carries an SRP of $90.

Compass Box Menagerie

This limited-edition blended malt was made by Compass Box Whiskymaker James Saxon using single malts from four distilleries as well as the brand’s own Highland malt blend. The single malt whiskies were Mortlach and Deanston, which make up the bulk of the blend, as well as Glen Elgin and Laphroaig. Only 7,741 bottles are available globally with availability in the US beginning in April 2021 with an SRP of $120.

For Moms Who Like A Nightcap:

Ron Abuelo XII Two Oaks

This rum begins with a blend of rums aged 8 years and 40+ years. On average, that works out to just over 11 years of age. These rums were initially aged in ex-bourbon barrels. Then the rum was finished for 9 months in virgin American oak 200-liter barrels. Notably, these virgin barrels are extra-charred. First they are given a slow & low char for 60 minutes before getting a final char for 20-25 seconds, resulting in 8mm of black char on the barrels. Each bottle carries an SRP of $59.99.

Hennessy Master Blender’s Selection No. 4

The fourth limited release in Hennessy’s Master Blender’s Selection series is the second from Master Blender Renaud Fillioux de Gironde. He’s said to have been inspired by winter in the great outdoors while creating this blend. The expression is made with eau-de-vie distilled on a moderate level of lees, and aged for a minimum of five years in a combination of young and old French oak barrels. The cognac hit the market in March 2021 with an SRP of $89.99.
