As I shared a few weeks ago, we’ve been hard at work rebuilding the Distiller app from top to bottom. We redesigned and rebuilt the app from the ground up and plan to release it very soon. In the lead up to the launch, I’ll be diving deeper into various parts of how the new app will work.
Creating Reviews
Distiller users have created over a million reviews of spirits over the years. With the new version of the Distiller app, creating reviews will be even more powerful than ever. One of the biggest additions is the ability to add flavor tags. While creating a review, you’ll see a few of the most common tags for the chosen spirit that you can easily tap. You can also expand the flavor tag window and search for more flavors to add.
These flavor tags are a combination of the flavors that are most commonly mentioned in existing user reviews as well as the existing flavor profiles. So if a particular spirit is regularly tagged with “peaty,” then that flavor tag is likely to become one of the three suggested tags.
These flavor tags do far more than simply add more information to your review, though.
The New Flavor Profile
Previously, the only spirits that had flavor profiles were those that had been reviewed by Distiller’s Tasting Table. That meant that tens of thousands of spirit pages were without. Because our goal is to be the best source of information for spirits, we made the decision to update how flavor profiles are created in Distiller.
Now, instead of an expert reviewer creating a flavor profile after reviewing a spirit, we will be using the flavor tags added to reviews to generate flavor profiles. This means that every time you review a spirit and add flavor tags, you’re contributing to the overall flavor profile of a spirit. We went back through the millions of reviews that have already been created by our users and scraped out the flavor descriptors to build the new flavor profiles and create the list of flavor tags. Unsurprisingly the flavor profiles generated by users match the flavor profiles created by our experts incredibly closely.
For Distiller Pro members, these perks are increased by the addition of Flavor Search. In the new app, Pro members will be able to search and filter by flavors.
On spirit pages, you’ll see a new flavor profile that shows the three most predominant flavors for that spirit.
When you’re creating reviews in the new Distiller app you’ll also be able to add multiple photos from your camera or phone gallery. This will allow you to share photos of the bottle, your pour, your collection and more.
We hope you’re as excited to try out the new Distiller app as we are to share it with you.
Stay tuned for more news and an official release date coming soon.
