A rich but brittle and bitter bourbon that is overpriced and consistently performs below Maker’s 46, Weller Antique and other wheated bourbons in the $30-50 MSRP range. If Lux got this from Nelson County it’s gotta be the worst of the Old Fitzgerald stock. Nose: fruit, like cherries or raisins, toffee, a bit of ethanol Palate: more ethanol... but also sweet wheat and fruits, some vanilla spice Finish: medium and full of spice, some wandering floral notes come in. Mostly cinnamon on the finish. Total money grab by Lux. This is a $30 wheater. Tops.

Colonel E.H. Taylor, Jr. Single Barrel Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed May 11, 2019 (edited May 24, 2019)Nose: toasted oak, berries, maple syrup, cherries, candies walnuts, sweet cereal Palate: very rich and bright, semi-oily, more cherries, baked sweets, caramel, toffee, vanilla and butterscotch, hints of coconut and orange Finish: medium finish, but shorter than I expected. The age on this balanced well with the bonded proof Just a fantastic bourbon. It really is, to me, a lower proof George T. Stagg. So if you can snag a bottle under $90 it’s a huge steal considering what stagg is going for these days. The single barrel seems to be more sweet and oily and less dry than the small batch. So if you’re looking for a more refined Buffalo Trace/Eagle Rare go for the small batch. If you want a George T. Stagg you can actually find from time to time grab the single barrel. If you don’t count Pappy 15 which is $99 MSRP, this is the best bourbon under $100 you can buy. -
Store pick: Liquor Barn (KY) Age: 11 years Warehouse: KK (Additional: Series 5, Barrel 7, Schenley) Nose: wonderful nose with honey, mint, candy corn, oak, toasted biscuits Palate: rich, with butterscotch, mild peppercorn, Finish: quick but it’s such a rich pour it don’t mind. More spices, including cinnamon and hints of vanilla. Another top-notch Elijah Craig Barrel Select. The age really shines here. Elijah Craig is best at 11-12 years I have found.

New Riff Kentucky Straight Bourbon Bottled In Bond
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed May 8, 2019 (edited May 18, 2019)Nose: slightly sweet but a unique nose, hints of popcorn; somewhere between a good rye and a standard Four Roses Palate: rich, sweeter up front, hints of toffee but it’s dry for what it gives you at first Finish: spice kicks in here and it’s pleasant, food balance of wood sugars and spices, hints of vanilla A hidden gem because it’s on most shelves in Kentucky. Definitely will try again and explore -
Four Roses Private Selection Single Barrel Barrel Strength Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed April 28, 2019 (edited November 30, 2019)Coming back to this bottle after a couple of months. It has faired well. 126 proof, barrel select (Cox/Evergreen, KY) OESV Nose: brown sugar, maple syrup, candy corn, tobacco leaves, toffee Palate: rich and sweet, creamy, not as spicy as other Four Roses recipes which makes sense Finish: medium, good rye spice warmth; not too dry, semi-sweet, more brown sugar, candy corn and some vanilla, decent spice but nothing like some of the higher rye recipes (such as OBSV) -
This was a lower-rated bourbon for many as it did not live up to many of the fantastic Bookers batches released before it. It is, however, a supercharged Jim Beam, echoing the traditional mainstream whiskey with rich flavors and balance all its own. Nose: charred oak and sweet corn—it’s a more complicated and satisfying Jim Beam white label Palate: candied nuts, bright fruits, hints of butterscotch Finish: very warm and long when neat, but more approachable and sweet after several drops of water; it’s slightly drier than the nose and palate predicted but it’s a good balance, vanilla baking spices at the end, but still it’s a rather sweet finish A solid Bookers batch and if I were recommending a specific batch to Beam lovers to expand their horizons this would be it.50.0 USD per BottleCostco Wholesale

Russell's Reserve 10 Year Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed April 27, 2019 (edited December 6, 2022)At cost, availability and overall quality, there is hardly a bourbon out there than beats Russell’s Reserve 10-year. I’d say Eagle Rare is about the only other one in that category and it’s becoming harder to find. Don’t get me started on McKenna 10. Nose: bright but rich, butterscotch, hints of cinnamon, oak and fruits Palate: creamy candy corn, more cinnamon and vanilla Finish: more of the rye spices come in here but not too overwhelming. More light oak, baking spices, vanilla This isn’t the most complicated bourbon in the world but at 90 proof and the continued age statement this is a great supper and fantastic buy.
