Barrel Select: Cox/Evergreen (KY) Barrel Pick #1 - 2019 Nose: pleasant and balanced, sweet peanuts, oak, butterscotch leather, fruits Palate: more butterscotch, hints of vanilla and spices Finish: spice comes through here but not too warm, hints of cinnamon It’s a little bitter and dry for my tastes at the end. A solid store pick. I’ve had better of the ECSB barrel picks but this is still quite representative of their small batch store picks.

Nose: small batch 1792 has a bit more sweet and dark fruits on the nose but this starts out with leather and rye. Not a super spicy nose but the earthy rye is definitely there. Hints of tea, honey and corn. That’s a predictor of things to come. Palate: the rye nose gives way to a balanced, rich, brown sugar sweet with hints of cinnamon and butterscotch. More honeyed flavors here too. Finish: the rye comes back here with spicy warmth. Vanilla and nutmeg. Is quite a complex journey from start to finish for this bourbon. This is a different experience than the small batch I’ve had. It’s different in a unique and pleasant way.45.0 USD per BottleWestport Whiskey & Wine

Bottled: 2018 Age: unknown Proof: 98.6 Nose: a perfect balance of corn, oak and leather, hints of butterscotch, subtle earthy tones from the high rye mashbill Palate: quite spicy, with dark fruits and vanilla, mid palate peppers Finish: this bourbon starts sweet and punchy, then spice on the mid palate and after peaking finishes with a bit softer flourishes, hints of toffee and more vanilla, baking spices This is the best 1792 has to offer based on what I’ve tried. If a bourbon can crescendo, to borrow a music term, this one delivers. It’s excellent. Because it’s a single barrel, your mileage may vary.40.0 USD per BottleWestport Whiskey & Wine

Barreled: February 2007 Barrel# 5132368 Nose: sweet corn, cereal notes, and hints of cherry Palate: rich, slightly bitter and drier than I expected, hints of Butterscotch Finish: more dryness here, additional bitterness, but more sweet fruits and brown sugar than at first Richer than the standard bottom shelf Rebel Year, the quality of this bourbon is about the same as easy to find wheaters such as Makers 46. While the nose is quite good, the palate and finish are not as complex and a bit bitter and brittle. While Heaven Hill is reported to be the source for this bourbon, it’s nowhere near the quality of the Old Fitzgerald aged stated releases. I’ve seen this whiskey upwards of $90 and it’s not worth that. But for a 10-year-old wheated bourbon it’s quite unique. However I’d rather have a Makers 46 over this any day. And since that bourbon is readily available and less expensive, I’m docking this bourbon a few ticks.85.0 USD per Bottle

As with Tullamore DEW, this is a great introduction to Irish whiskey for bourbon drinkers. Nose: honeydew, lemon, biscuits, hints of oak and corn way back Palate: more honey, slight toffee, hints of vanilla and baking spices Finish: smooth, bright and sweet. Not as spicy as Tullamore DEW. Hints of butterscotch. Pleasant.25.0 USD per Bottle

Knob Creek 9 Year Single Barrel Reserve
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed April 20, 2019 (edited April 21, 2019)Barrel Select store pick Liquor Barn (KY) Age: 14 years Nose: the age on this bourbon really dampens the proof with a rich, semi sweet aroma that includes dark fruits, candy corn and pleasant aged oak Palate: rich with vanilla, baking spices, hints of buttered bread and nutmeg Finish: spice and proof does come up here, but pleasant. Oak returns on the finish. Some zesty citrus too. Despite the age of 14 years, this store pick is well balanced, not too oaky, a bit spicy, but enough sweetness to spread things out. It consistently beats Bookers for me, but your mileage may vary.50.0 USD per BottleLiquor Barn -
Maker's Mark 46 French Oaked
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed April 20, 2019 (edited March 14, 2022)Nose: pleasant sweet corn, cereal, wheat, and cherry sugars, with hints of leather Palate: rich with maple syrup and brown sugar, hints of vanilla baking spices Finish: exceptionally smooth, with a little toffee and butterscotch, a little more vanilla and spice, maybe caramel One of the best easy to find bourbons out there.38.0 USD per Bottle -
I call this Baby Stagg. This is closer to George T Stagg (and not Stagg Jr), just a lower proof with less age. Still quite great. Nose: very sweet cherries, butterscotch, oak, candy corn. Palate: rich with even more cherries and raisins, baking spices and hints of vanilla. Finish: barely any warmth at all, very smooth with hints of citrus, spices creep in more here but barely Cherry sweet on the palate, more so than standard EH Taylor Small Batch. Very balanced. The additional age (I’m guessing) over Eagle Rare smoothes this out even more and does not taste like a 100-proof bourbon. Will come back to this one and do a blind with the small batch as well as Eagle Rare and standard BT. Of course the George T Stagg is spicier, older and warmer but this is damned close.70.0 USD per Bottle

Nose: honey, candy corn, maple syrup, toffee Palate: bright with hints of butterscotch, honey, citrus, biscuits, tea, barley malt Finish: smooth and short, more Barley at the end, which balances the grain and pot stilled whiskey in this excellent dram Nothing bad to ever say about this Irish staple.

Nose: sweet corn, butterscotch, pecans and maple syrup Palate: sweet orange zest, vanilla baking spices, pleasant and balanced Finish: toffee, hints of dark fruits and more vanilla Great standard, on the level of Buffalo Trace & Elijah Craig. This is a high rye bourbon but you wouldn’t assume that in a blind tasting. Very balanced. Barrel selects of this are great.
