Often I go back to mass-produced whiskey to see how it’s holding up over the higher proofs, longer aged, and unique-finished whiskies. It rarely disappoints. Makers Mark is a very consistent and inexpensive whiskey. Like an old friend, it’s comfortable and reliable. Nose: caramel, cereal, candy corn, light oak Taste: vanilla, baking slices, hint of maple syrup and cinnamon Finish: short There’s not a lot to say but there’s not a lot to criticize about Makers Mark. Neat, cocktail, ice. Drink it any way you want and it’s a fine whiskey.26.0 USD per Bottle

1792 Full Proof Straight Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed October 19, 2022 (edited December 7, 2022)Nose: reminds me of higher proof Heaven Hill… raisins, walnuts, dusty corn, cherries, hints of tobacco, brine Palate: caramel it’s brown sugar, followed by minty rye spice, hints of honey Finish: long, with more mint and buttery molasses there at the end This bottle has opened up nicely since I first tasted this and reviewed about six months ago. -
I bought this recently for about US$65, which, in my opinion, is a steal. Bottles are climbing higher and I’m worried we’ll be hard pressed to find most 12-years under $100. I hope I’m wrong. Nose: creamy caramel and vanilla, honey, nuts, plum, raisins. Taste: very balanced mix of the candied fruits and rich sherry influence. A little ginger and baking spices on the palate as well. Finish: medium, even Great, great scotch. So consistent and hopefully still a good value on the shelf. Many get peat from this one but I only occasionally detect the smoke on the mid palate. Not much of it elsewhere.65.0 USD per Bottle

Boone County Small Batch Bourbon

Peerless Small Batch Kentucky Straight Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed March 26, 2022 (edited June 28, 2022)Like a lot of craft distilleries, the higher proof masks several imperfections. It’s a lot of bite and a little bit of citrus, baking spices and youth. I bet this would be a pretty nice bourbon if they let it sit a few more years.40.0 USD per Bottle -
Old Forester 1910 Old Fine Whisky
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed March 20, 2022 (edited March 26, 2022)Recently compared a 2022 bottle of 1910 to 2019 and this has lost some of its luster for me. Woodford Double Oaked has a similar flavor profile but is a few rungs better. -
1792 Full Proof Straight Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed February 22, 2022 (edited May 11, 2022)Nose: One of the better bourbon noses I’ve tried in awhile. Cherries, dusty coffee beans, barnyard hay, dried corn, maple syrup. There’s a lot going on here. Taste: very dense and rich, but surprisingly not as hot as it noses or as the 125 proof suggests. The nose is so complex the taste is pretty underwhelming. Water opens it up a bit but it’s not a great palate to be honest. Finish: weirdly enough, while it lingers on the way down it’s not a super hot or long finish for a full proof bourbon. This is a weird one. Will have to come back to it. -
Evan Williams 12 Year Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed February 22, 2022 (edited August 5, 2023)Nose: typical Heaven Hill dusty candied corn nose Taste: lots of cinnamon and peppercorn Finish: medium At $130 in the Louisville Evan Williams Experience tour gift shop, this isn’t any better than most Knob Creek store picks or their 12-year, and those are quite a bit cheaper and easier to find. I wouldn’t seek this out unless you’re a diehard HH/Evan Williams fan. To me, the EW Single Barrel is a tremendously better value.130.0 USD per Bottle
