GlenDronach Original 12 Year
GlenDronach // Highlands, Scotland
As the color likely gave away, this whisky is matured in ex-sherry casks; in this case, it is a combination of Oloroso and Pedro Ximenez (aka PX) sherry. In 2005, this distillery finally changed from heating the stills with direct coal fire to an indirect heat source (steam). Direct fire creates hot spots and tends to provide a toffee/caramel roasted quality to the whisky. We await the results of the change in future bottlings.
Single MaltDistilled in pot stills from 100% malted barley, produced at one distillery, aged in barrels; if Scotch or Irish, must be aged for at least three years.
Cask Typeex-Oloroso sherry, ex-Pedro Ximenez sherry
"The aroma is fairly aromatic with dark malt and vanilla. Smoke is found as well, but it's a charred barrel quality and not peat reek. Smooth on your palate, there is dark caramel and more malt to be found. Somewhat chewy, the finish has a woody aspect and the sugar and spice are backup singers to the headliner that is dried fruit."
