Belle Meade Bourbon Sherry Cask Finish
Bourbon — Indiana (bottled in Tennessee), USA
Reviewed June 12, 2020Wow. Sherry, rich chocolate, and dark fruits (blackberry, black cherry) in the nose, with a touch of oak and orange peel. Palate is also very fruit forward, revealing plums and raspberry, with a deep, beautiful depth of dark chocolate, vanilla, and heaps of brown sugar dusted with cinnamon and rye spice, which fade into an oak finish with slight tannins, leather, and cigar. -

Nose is chocolate, vanilla, and nutmeg, plus some undiscernible, slightly sour note. Getting a strong chocolate note on the taste, making me very much a fan, followed by a very slight spice and cinnamon. A faint note of Luxardo cherry appears after a couple sips. Oak, leather and minimal drying tanins end quickly on a medium finish. The rye spice is definitely present on the finish. Paired my second pour with some dark chocolate and dropped in a single Luxardo cherry and it was phenomenal. I really appreciate their transparency regarding sourcing as well.

Loving what the barrel and high rye content contribute to this bourbon on the nose and taste. For me, it’s a two-trick pony: rye spice and barrel notes—that’s all I’m getting. I bought this as a comparator to Eagle Rare’s low rye mash bill, also aged at 10 years. As much as I love the rye notes and how they can balance the sweetness of the corn in this, I actually prefer Eagle Rare. This is not at all a bad bourbon, though, and I would love to try this in a flight compared to their no age statement bourbon and rye.

Very aromatic nose. Cherry and vanilla on the nose for me. Maybe some brown sugar. Rye notes for sure and some perfume on the nose. Nosing too deeply definitely presents some alcohol burn. To taste, sweet at the start but definitely rye forward. Black pepper mid palate and spice. Some alcohol burn on the taste, but it’s minimal for this proof. Surprisingly getting a note of... corn (?)... on the finish this tasting. Amazing value for a rye.
