NAS blended malt from MacDuff. They don't name any of the sourced distilleries. They say a healthy amount of this whiskey comes from sherry casks. It's coloured and chill filtered. On the nose it's a weak and vague mix of classic Speyside and sherry. Palate is high abv, low taste. Barely any fruit or sherry notes come through. Very bland overall. This has the profile of a cheap blend more than a blended malt. Finish is short and empty, besides the hit from the high abv. Adding water doesn't help. This is one of the worst blended malts I have tasted. Only good for mixing.

Very light, smooth, sweet with initially fruity notes, plus vanilla, toffee and a bit of that French barrel. I usually drink whiskey and this armagnac reminds me of some classic Irish and Speyside drams. The palate gradually evolves over time, opening up with light notes of fresh grapes, dry raisins, chocolate, caramel. The finish is sweet but short. It's one of those drinks that you want to keep sipping instead of taking time to analyze every drop, like you would with a heavier cognac - and that's perfectly fine! This armagnac lacks complexity, but it's simply very easy and enjoyable to drink. It's mellow and still manages to be memorable. Another pleasant side of this drink is that it comes without any sugar, colouring or chill filtration - which you certainly can't say about cognacs in this price range! Although, at this price, I would rather enjoy a more complex whiskey.

BenRiach Curiositas 10 Year
Single Malt — Speyside, Scotland
Reviewed January 23, 2021 (edited April 18, 2021)Very smooth and pleasant peat here mixed with fruity and spicy notes. This is classic Speyside plus Highland peat which is much smoother than Islay. Smoke comes first on the nose and palette, then quickly gives way to the rest of the notes. Smoke returns on the finish and closes with a nice hit of spice. Smoke and spice linger for a few minutes. The rum cask makes this even tastier. A very enjoyable and superb malt for the collection. It's actually better without any water, as there's nothing excessive to really dilute here. Excellent value whisky! -
Singleton of Dufftown Malt Master's Selection
Single Malt — Speyside, Scotland
Reviewed January 22, 2021A decent and memorable budget scotch malt. It's not as smooth and mellow as you might think. The young malt here has a nice kick to it, which I always enjoy in a whiskey. The overall profile reminds me of some good blends. Fruity, sweet and spicy, a long finish with some wood notes present. The sherry component here is nicely evident all the way. I would recommend this to someone who likes blends and wants to cross into malt land. -
A very smooth and tasty Irish blend. It's certainly more pleasant and memorable than the base Jameson, Tullamore and Bushmills, but it's also more pricey and doesn't have much character of its own. I expected more punch from a whiskey by Connor. This is also overpriced for its class, considering it costs a lot more than a base Kilbeggan but doesn't actually offer much more to enjoy. When it comes to Irish blends, I would pick The Pogues or Writer's Tears over this any day.

A smooth and tasty peated scotch blend. Nice dose of Talisker malt here. Light smoke comes through first on the nose and palette, followed by a mix of honey, vanilla and oak notes. Feels quite malty overall. An easy drinking and light blend. Quite long and smoky finish. A pleasant combination of Speyside and Islands profiles. Great bang for the buck. Highly recommended for fans of peated blends.

Glen Grant The Major's Reserve
Single Malt — Speyside, Scotland
Reviewed December 31, 2020 (edited December 13, 2021)A very smooth and unusually fruity scotch malt. In a blind tasting I could easily mistake this for an Irish. The price is decent too. This comes at 40% abv with a 5 year premise. Overall a passable malt, although it lacks originality, complexity and richness. Glen Grant is simply not as memorable as I prefer my whisky to be. -
Kilbeggan Blended Irish Whiskey
Blended — Ireland
Reviewed December 22, 2020 (edited January 1, 2021)An original and very decent budget blend. The double distillation and 4 year premise make it stand out from other Irish triple distilled blends. This whiskey actually feels a bit maltier than the competition. Smooth, fruity and somewhat sweet. A highly recommended blend if you're looking for something different from Jameson, Tullamore and Bushmills.
