Single Cask Nation, The Water of Life, Take 2 Wolf Island
Single Malt — Island, Scotland
Reviewed August 15, 2024A nice easy drinking vatted malt thats a bit on the sweeter side. Without reading any background on the bottle I probably would have assumed it was a blended Scotch since the flavors are fairly subtle, but I went through my bottle fairly quickly so no real complaints!70.0 USD per BottleCentury Liquor & Wines -
Im fortunate to live in an area that has access to a number of single cask selections from Privateer; this was a PM Spirits pick. I’ve always wanted to love Privateer, having grown up in the Boston area and knowing they make a rum particularly tuned to the bourbon palate, but this wasnt the bottle that won me over. No, falling first for funky Hampden, Beenleigh and Guyanese rums this just felt too subtle. It took some bolder Privateer releases, a 7 year molasses based rum and a cask strength queens share collab with PM spirits to hook me and when I revisited this bottle suddenly it clicked with me. Now I strongly believe this distiller stands up to the best Foursquare can offer. This particular bottle can be very bourbon-y with the new oak influence, but its unmistakably a rum with its excellent mouthfeel, coconut and anise notes. I started this bottle as a Privateer skeptic practically ready to write off the distillery and emptied it a die hard fan so excited to see whats in store for the future.60.0 USD per BottleNoble Root Wine & Spirits

grander barrel series panama rum finished in rye whiskey barrels
Aged Rum — USA
Reviewed June 18, 2023This review is for the “Why Rum When You Can Rye,” group pick from Rochester, NY Elite Barrel Pickers. I loved this first experience with both Grander and Panama rums. I was immediatelt impressed with how well this column still rum held up to the 3 year rye barrel finish. Im interested in trying a single barrel expression with less aggressive finishing but I’ve also heard great things about the Port finish so I’ll be in the lookout for that as well. A thoroughly enjoyable sweet but complex and oak-forward rum that I intend to keep a bottle of on the shelf.69.99 USD per BottleHoffend's Discount Liquor -
Single Cask Nation turned me on to Japanese rice whiskies with their Ohishi aged 7 years in a refill sherry hogshead, a sweet and unctuous experience I continued to chase after finishing that bottle. Other Ohishi expressions didn’t do it for me but this Fukano special release is the closest I’ve found to recapturing that special cask. The marriage of a sweet and complex finishing cask with the unsurpassed moutfeel of rice whisky is something ill always want on my shelf.Amherst St. Wine & Liquor

Holmes Cay Australia Beenleigh 2012
Aged Rum — Australia
Reviewed April 15, 2023 (edited April 17, 2023)A Single Cask Nation release of Beenleigh Rum is largely responsible for pulling me into the world of rum, it’s a funky dunder-bomb that I have not bottle-killed and reviewed yet. This release isn’t quite at that level, but captures a lot of that Australian magic. A heavy dose of Sharpie marker on the nose is always an indication I’m in for a good time and these high proof Beenleighs share that characteristic with aged rums from Guyana. So when I mention the ester-y funk think of that more than Jamaica. After that I get a nice burst of fruit followed up by bbq flavors that I associate closely with this distillery specifically. It takes water well and in my opinion needs a healthy splash and some time in glass to unlock. I was disappointed with this bottle initially before I took those preparations, but once I figured out the proper care and feeding it didn’t last long.94.0 USD per BottleBaytowne Wine & Spirits -
Wright & Brown Single Malt BiB
American Single Malt — USA
Reviewed April 15, 2023 (edited April 16, 2023)Took a chance on this while making an online order since this distillery doesnt get any distribution in my area and its a bottled-in-bond American single malt! Well, looking back on my receipts I’m embarrassed that I spent $100 on this because after two sittings I poured it right down the drain - something that doesn’t happen often but that I’m not afraid to do rather than throw good time and liver enzymes after bad money. It’s just a thin, uninteresting experience with an off putting bitterness at the end. Fresh cracked with a friend and apologized immediately after tasting it and seeing the look on his face. Spend your ASM money on something like Westward cask strength instead.100.0 USD per BottleDel Mesa Liquor and Deli -
This was a Rochester Whiskey Enthusiasts group pick and my first experience with Spirits of French Lick and a buckwheat-forward bourbon. This bottle evoked chocolate chip pancakes with maple syrup and really nailed the breakfast theming with the name “Morning Glory.” The slightly higher abv on this store pick kept the entire experience from being too sweet with a bit of ethanol burn and rye spice on the backend. I would like to replace this bottle at some point, it’s a unique and delicious product that has gone over extremely well with non-whiskey nerd friends. I’ll be keeping a look out for another group pick.Baytowne Wine & Spirits

Transcontinental Rum Line Australia 2014
Aged Rum — Australia
Reviewed February 7, 2023 (edited April 6, 2023)This is a nice entry point to the high-ester world of Beenleigh’s pot distilled rum. This particular release isn’t overly complex or challenging but you can still get a bit of the funk typical of the distillery (which uses a process similar to those made famous by Jamaican rum distilleries) Waves of vanilla extract pour out of the glass once it’s been sitting for a few minutes, but on closer inspection you can draw out the chemical-y hogo on the nose. Theres also a very sweet palate and cognac-influenced finish from the barrel finish typical of the bottler. I’m happy to have drunk this bottle and happy to move on to other things Beenleigh. I won’t be picking up a backup but will continue to grab any TCRL Australia releases I see out in the wild.60.0 USD per Bottle -
Westward Chardonnay Cask
American Single Malt — Oregon , USA
Reviewed February 7, 2023 (edited April 6, 2023)This is sort of a rating for both the Chardonnay cask finished whiskey that Lost Lantern selected in 2022 and the one that shipped direct from the distillery as part of their quarterly release club: both fantastic entries in Westward’s exciting barrel finishing program. The Chardonnay casks added their usual bright white-fleshed fruit flavors like grape and pear to the muscular single malt base I always enjoy. I’m always excited When I find a product like Westward single malt that can take aggressive finishes while maintaining it’s identity as a spirit. Enjoying something familiar and new at the same time is a dream worth chasing in the whiskey world. The Lost Lantern slightly edged out the distillery release for being just the slight bit bolder and more scrumptious as you’d expect from the higher proof (about 120 compared to 90).99.0 USD per BottleHouse Spirits Distillery -
Method and Madness Single Pot Still Finished in Chestnut Casks
Single Pot Still — Ireland
Reviewed January 27, 2023 (edited April 6, 2023)I’ll try any cask finish once and chestnut cask was new to me. I enjoyed it and I think the additional finish amped up some of what I like in an Irish whiskey with it’s intense nutty notes. I like a sweet whiskey and I know there’s going to be some serious honey to any Midleton distillate, but it lost a bit for lacking some complexity and the finish can trail off into a weirdly bitter almond shell taste. Still, great creamy texture and an easygoing drink when you want something that smacks of county fair roasted nuts.70.0 USD per BottleAmherst St. Wine & Liquor
