Ledaig 19 Year Masarla Finish
Single Malt — Island, Scotland
Reviewed May 1, 2020 (edited February 10, 2021)It’s got everything. Peat, dark fruit, abv, earthiness, spice, richness, complexity. Easily worth the price and right up there with the best Scotches in my collection. 93.5 / 100 -
Tasted both neat and in an Iced Irish Coffee with sweet creamer. Neat, it's not a great whiskey, overly bitter, thin, tastes more like coffee than whiskey. 2 stars there. But that's not what it's really meant for..... Mixed in the drink over ice is where it shines. It holds up to the creamer nicely, provides a solid coffee flavor, and is high-enough proof to keep the booze in place. I'll definitely continue using this as a mixer going forward.29.0 USD per Bottle

Falling out of love with this one, though I never really preferred it to the 12CS anyway. Nothing “wrong” with it per se but to me it ends up a bit dull and without any specific redeeming qualities that would justify its premium. Tyrconnell 16, RB12CS, Powers Johns Lane, and Green Spot are all Irish bottles I prefer to this, and all are significantly cheaper.

Knob Creek Single Barrel Select Rye
Rye — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed March 9, 2020 (edited October 21, 2024)Got this as a store pick (obviously), aged around 5.5 years. Got to taste it first and thought it easily warranted the $42 price point to pull the trigger. A damp hay spice in the front melts away into a sweeter, smoother finish with floral notes drifting in and out. To me, the Knob Creek brand is reliably good (and available) and one of the best values out there in the Bourbon game. Keep it up Beam...keep it up42.0 USD per BottleHamilton Super Buy-Rite -
Love this one as a friendly companion on a ever-chilling evening following the first warm day of the year. Just the perfect age for a refined Peated Islay imo, highlighting the peat enough in the foreground without being overpowering nor fading away. Sometimes I mix (“blend”) this with the 18 Unpeated cask strength at a 2:1 ratio, to increase the abv and add characteristics of a more dominant malt. Either way, excellent Scotch

Haven’t had many flavored whiskies but this one is really good! Gift from my dad who spends a lot of time in Durango and it intrigued me enough to uncork it right away. Drinking over ice with dinner is quite a departure from my typical tasting sessions, but it drinks like a cocktail with a perfect amount of sweetness and bourbon flavor. Honestly blown away...it’s no JD Tennessee Honey that’s for sure!
