Michter's US*1 Kentucky Straight Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed February 11, 2019 (edited February 27, 2019)This is really a great bourbon. Lots of caramel, butterscotch, cherry, and vanilla on the nose and palate. Oddly enough, at almost 92% there’s almost no alcohol burn. If this were just a hair cheaper it would be a “needs to be kept on hand at all times.” $40 stretches it just a hair for me. This is right up there with Eagle Rare for me either way. I’ll get either when I can find them and the budget allows for it. -
I really wanted to like this. I watched a video of a blind head-to-head of Small Batch bourbons and for one of the tasters this came in second behind EH Taylor. It just doesn’t do it for me. It’s not horrible, and I wouldn’t turn it down if someone offered it to me, I just won’t buy it again. Even at $17. It just has a bit too much of the acetone/ethanol taste to it to be good. I A/B’d this with standard Buffalo Trace and the BT blew it away. Like I said, it’s not horrible, it’s just fairly one dimensional and also has that slightly off-putting note. I’m very disappointed. I love EW Single Barrel.

Johnny Drum Private Stock Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed January 30, 2019 (edited February 12, 2019)Very ok. Slightly disappointed. Tastes like a red hot with maybe some cherry influence. I really didn’t get much past that. Even the nose is just a lot of cinnamon. It wasn’t bad, just not as good as I’d hoped. -
Larceny Small Batch Kentucky Straight Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed November 7, 2017 (edited September 5, 2018)Very ok. Just average all the way around. Not bad by any means, but not very good either. If someone bought me some I wouldn’t turn it down, but I won’t go buy it on my own. I smelled/tasted vanilla, brown sugar, oak, and alcohol. That’s really all there is to it. Finish is a little hot, probably due to the 92 proof. I gave it 2 stars because I consider my standard everyday bourbon to be the baseline for 3 stars. This isn’t going to replace my go-to’s. If I could have given it 2.5, I would have. Again, not bad, just not all that good either. -
Old Forester Classic 86 Proof
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed July 7, 2017 (edited December 17, 2017)FOR THE PRICE, this is really good. It was the first bourbon that got me to like whiskey. It's fairly sweet and a bit fruity. Not super complicated, but for the price point it's complex. I think this gets dismissed by whiskey snobs more than it should because it has a screw top. -
Elijah Craig Small Batch Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed May 17, 2017 (edited June 4, 2017)Lots of vanilla and caramel aroma. Sweet up front, kind of butterscotchy? Spice and heat on the back end that lingers. Damn good for $25.
