Deanston Virgin Oak
Single Malt — Highlands, Scotland
Reviewed November 6, 2017 (edited December 9, 2018)Great value. Tastes nearly fully matured, but has more alcohol nip than a standard 12 year old especially at over 46 percent abv. I would say if you're in the mood for a rich full bodied, Highland scotch this will do the trick. Not my favorite, but i do enjoy coming back to it every now and again. Can't go wrong for the price, it's head and shoulders above all blended Scotch brands imo except maybe compass box... But it's let expensive! Immediate competition would be Tomatin Legacy which is more refined but not as full bodied to my palate 3.5. -
Something odd I've noticed about this one is sometimes it has a funky taste and sometimes it doesn't. This obviously comes down to ones own palate. Perhaps something eaten earlier or even bad breath that doesn't agree with it. That being said this has got to be the only whisky I've encountered this issue with. Otherwise it's very good and I like it a lot. It's more in line with the stronger rye's like norther harvest and lot 40 than the typical lower strength Canadian blends. Its full flavored..Nose is Peppery, floral, oaky with sweet maple syrup and brown sugar in the background. A terrific nose! Palate is menthol, floral, earl grey tea (orange), and obviously overall rye. Aside from the occasional off note I get this is an exceptional value. Great Canadian whisky!
