Tastes

Smells medicinal--like a Laphroaig. Floral notes and then an astoundingly lemony pop! The lemon completely dominates the aftertaste. But enough peat comes through to make this a decent bottle for the money--but as a peat-lover, I'd rather spend the extra few dollars to get Laphroaig 10 Year.

Ah, the Laphroaig taste that I love! The peat is here in abundance, just like the Laphroaig Quarter Cask, but the taste isn't quite as sweet.

Surprisingly dark chocolaty-sweet! The tip of my tongue is singing mint, while the peatiness is still there in the back of my throat. That said, it's less peaty than I had expected.

I had a hot-cold relationship with this one for my first several tastings. I'll come right out and say it: I find the fruitiness overwhelming on the initial nosing and tasting. But if I stick with it, by continuing to breathe the smell in, and if I swallow it, suddenly all the flavour changes in a really surprising and delightful way! The peatiness then comes out, and the saltiness helps to balance the sweetness. Actually, the after-taste goes through more than one taste development, and the finish is both long and spicy--like a warm Christmas punch!

This was my first peated Scotch, and the first whisky I ever really liked. Love the taste of wood, and the peatbomb itself! The glass also smells good hours after being emptied.
