I had to let the whiskey sit out for a little while because I was getting nothing but hot alcohol vapors on the nose. After some time I still got a little spice. Reminded me of the smell I got from Buffalo Trace (I thought). Doing a nose comparison between the two, Weller has a much stronger nose overall compared to Buffalo Trace. I also got a little bit honey and cinnamon. After taking a drink I can smell big caramel notes. Tasting, I’m surprised how much spice I’m getting from the wheated bourbon. A lot of the same nose characteristics come through. Comparing side by side Buffalo Trace and Weller Special Reserve. Buffalo Trace is sweeter but also more muted flavors while Weller Special Reserve’s flavors are more amplified but not by a severe amount. Still spicier then Buffalo Trace. Both are at the same 90 proof.

On the nose I’m getting a lot of spice but for some reason I’m also getting a sweet bubble gum smell, like Big League Chew. Could be it’s just reminding of the Old Fashions I make with it. When tasting, the sweetness is more subdued and the herbal spice is ramped up but still soft. A nice beginner introduction to rye whiskey. Fantastic for Old Fashion cocktails.26.99 USD per Bottle
