White Oak Akashi Blended Whisky
Blended — Hyogo, Japan
Reviewed July 26, 2019 (edited August 5, 2019)Sweet nose at first but immediately shifts to earthy scents including lemongrass and dirt. Palate is really yeasty with subtle moss. Finish is extremely dry and relatively short. -
Knob Creek 9 Year Single Barrel Reserve
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed July 20, 2019 (edited August 12, 2019)Wasn't sure about this at first, but have really come around to it. Definitely needs water and air. Let it sit for a few moments before sipping. Heavy cinnamon burn up front, which dissipates into a gingerbread-like sweetness. Finish is medium, not quite hanging around until the next sip. Decent bourbon, just a bit hot. -
GlenDronach Revival 15 Year (2009-2015)
Single Malt — Highlands, Scotland
Reviewed July 14, 2019 (edited June 5, 2020)Malty sweet nose, cherries, brown sugar, somewhat subtle nutty smell. Oily mouthfeel with an instant hit of sweetness with a full mouth spice gradually building into the finish. Finish is medium long with a slight burn down the hatch, which dissipates into fruity sweetness again. These flavors linger on the back of the tongue until the next sip. Favorite thing about this is the Sherry sweetness combined with the burn, both coming and going synchronously to create a great drinking experience.90.0 USD per BottleFive Points Bottle Shop -
Barrell Bourbon Batch 018
Bourbon — (bottled in) Kentucky, USA
Reviewed June 20, 2019 (edited July 13, 2019)Nose of vanilla and cinnamon with a slight burn off the nostrils. There's also a mineral smell to it, almost like wet stone. Having had Dickel, I now recognize this as the vitamin characteristic they're known for. The smell of oak underpins everything. Sweet molasses and wood notes with a red hot burn on the tongue. The heat quickly dissipates to a comfortable warmth, which lingers through the end of a mid-length finish. Left with sweet sensation that follows a red hot binge. Lingering mineral taste following it all. This whiskey jumps around a lot, and I think it's due to the high rye, low rye blend. You get the rye spice from the Kentucky and Indiana juice, but then you get the sweet and mineral notes from the high corn Dickel juice. It's good - unexpected, but good. -
Gibson's Finest Rare 12 Year
Canadian — Ontario , Canada
Reviewed May 11, 2019 (edited February 16, 2021)Sweet nose, easy on the pallet, spicey cinnamon finish. Update: having had more whiskeys since trying, amending my initial review to a lower rating for consistency of scale.
