Glenmorangie Bacalta
Single Malt — Highland, Scotland
Reviewed February 27, 2017 (edited March 8, 2017)3 or 4, 3 or 4. I went with 4 in the end - high 3's to be exact. Lovely viscosity, sweetness and fruitiness. Would I buy a bottle. No. Bit to sweet for me and the rest of the components whilst well integrated aren't awesome enough to compensate for this factor versus say a Yellow Spot 12 year -
Bunnahabhain 18 Year
Single Malt — Islay, Scotland
Reviewed February 27, 2017 (edited January 30, 2022)Great whisky. Took a bit to get into it but once I tasted against Glendronach 21, Glen Balcalta and others I really rate this. An Islay style Springbank 18 I'd equate it to - not the same flavour exactly but has that oiliness, dry finish and something I can't place my finger on. Came 1st on the night out of several whiskeys we tried. Have an unopened bottle at home so will be interested to see once opened how this one develops. Update. 3 years later I finally opened the bottle for a whiskey tasting with friends. That turned into a bit of a blur with 10 different whiskies tried but now with just 2 others to compare to it definitely needs a rating upgrade. 4.25 is my thinking. Rich lightly smoked cherry flavoured sherry, nice abv balance. At the current price I wouldn't get another bottle as there is better value propositions out there but don't regret buying the bottle. Update Jan 2020: This is one of the rare bottles which for me gets better and better with time open. It mellows whilst also rounding out further. 4.5 -
GlenDronach 12 Year Sauternes Finish
Single Malt — Highlands, Scotland
Reviewed February 24, 2017 (edited December 30, 2021)I love Glendronach. Along with Laphroaig it's my favourite distillery. Initially when I tried this along with a dozen or so other whiskies including Glendronach 14 year Virgin oak (which most thought probably best whisky of the night and they demolished the bottle!) I didn't think it was a stand out. The flavour profile seemed muted. Now I've allowed it to breathe for a while its opened up. Honey, apricot, vanilla and green apples come through with that familiar Glendronach spicy viscosity. I now rate this a 3.75 so given the price point at just over $60USD I'll round this this to a 4. -
BenRiach Sauternes Finish 16 Year
Single Malt — Speyside, Scotland
Reviewed February 24, 2017 (edited June 21, 2021)I haven't tried a lot of sauterne finished whiskies. This the glendronach 12 and the Arran sauterne. I'd have to compare all three together to confirm but I'd say this would be my least favorite of the three. Didn't have much mouth feel or viscosity the others did -
Doesn't do much for me this one. Slightly rough and don't get much distinct flavour. Both times I've tried at tastings it's been newly opened bottles and its been one of many whiskies which may have an impact. One tasting I tried this at was a flight of Arran whiskys and the 14 and sauternes finish comfortably bested this. Wouldn't say the distillery as a whole does much for me though. Definitely a high 2+, low 3 rating. If there was a 2.5 stars this would be it

Connemara 12 Year Peated Single Malt
Single Malt — Ireland
Reviewed February 23, 2017 (edited April 1, 2020)Not bad. Similar to a non islay scotch. Mild smoke. Definitely not my favorite peated whiskey or whisky -
BenRiach 16 Year
Single Malt — Speyside, Scotland
Reviewed February 23, 2017 (edited April 18, 2022)Initially when i tried I wasn't getting a lot out of this one. I found it a bit 'ethanolly' which masked the flavour profile. Roll on a few days and it opened up a fair bit more. Honey, vanilla, toffee and the alcohol become slightly more balanced. Still the aftertaste is a bit astringent. I rated this initially a 3 on first taste then on the 2nd once opened up a 4 taking into account the price of $60USD and the fact it's spent 16 years in a cask makes it a good value drop. Then on the third tasting months later it seems to have faded a bit and if I look at other 4s like a Laphroig PX, Bunnahabian 18 its not it the same class so back down to 3 it goes. They really need a half star rating system on this site! -
Cragganmore 12 Year
Single Malt — Speyside, Scotland
Reviewed February 23, 2017 (edited February 24, 2017)Light smoke, honey. Inoffensive. In saying all that there is something I like about this one. Maybe it's the mouth feel or how all the flavour components integrate well. Not a 4 but def 3.5
