Alberta Premium 30 Year
Alberta Distillers // Alberta, Canada
Alberta Distillers released this 30 year-old expression in 2011 and it was snatched up quickly at the price of $49.95 a bottle. The whisky is 100% rye grain aged in charred white oak barrels. Four years before it was bottled, the distillery outsmarted the angel’s share by re-barreling the whisky into fewer barrels essentially topping them up. 8,400 bottles were produced and a dusty bottle still shows up on a store shelf from time to time.
CanadianDISTILLED IN CANADA AND AGED IN BARRELS FOR AT LEAST THREE YEARS; OFTEN (BUT NOT ALWAYS) CANADIAN WHISKIES ARE BLENDS OF CORN, BARLEY, AND RYE WHISKIES WHICH WERE DISTILLED AND MATURED SEPARATELY. TRADITIONALLY, CANADIAN WHISKEY IS CALLED “RYE”, ALTHOUGH NO MINIMUM PERCENTAGE OF RYE-GRAIN WHISKY IS REQUIRED IN A BLEND.

"This whisky is like being punched by the Michelin Man. Soft and pillowy. Aged in well-used casks, the flavors come from oxidation with a slight caramel nose, crisp oak, restrained wood and fruity esters. Rye spices like clove and pepper accent floral notes. The sweetness carries through with a touch of vanilla. The wood has mellowed out the finish with an attack of citrus pith that’s just so slight."
