Caol Ila Distillers Edition

I found it more interresting on the nose than on the palate. Still very, very nice though.

A bit suprisingly to myself, Caol Ila has become one of my favorite distilleries on Islay. Opened this 2019 Distillers edition yesterday and I am enjoying it a lot! The nose is quite muted but with sweet peaty smoke promising something interesting. The mouth is sweet, smokey oily and quite spicy prickling on the tounge. A long aftertaste that is spice and peat turning vanilla and anise. Yum!

I purchased the vingtage 08/2020. It was a real treat and did not made any dissapointments. The smoke is really intense, so it's only recommended for those, who like strongly peated whiskies.

Moscatel is a sweet dessert wine, so this wood finish should nicely add to the mineral and peaty nature of the Caol Ila spirit. The nose reveals whiffs of firewood and embers, enriched by pronounced spices, maple syrup and seaweed. Peppermint, apricots and fresh ginger appear. On the palate, aromatic and sour notes blossom whilst briny peat smoke and a sugary overcoat round off the picture. Bitter tea, licorice and grapefruit zest accompany the earthy and slightly dry finish. Giving a twist on the Caol Ila theme, this Distillers Edition is very decent.
