Kentucky Straight Bourbon
Grain and Barrel Spirits
Bardstown Ky
Proof-90
Color- light, honey
Nose- slight ethanol, strong vanilla, caramel, subtle clover and field grass
Taste- mild and woody on the tip of the tongue. Really hits its stride mid- palette. The intensity rises mid tongue with a mild alcohol burn subtle earth notes and lots of woody notes, a mild white pepper and a hint of leather. The vanilla/ caramel nose is much more subtle than I expected. From the nose I expected a sweet bourbon but it’s not. There is a lot of earthy outdoorsy tastes that make this a lot more complex than I was inclined to expect from the nose. There is a quick flavor dip as it passes to the back of the mouth, but then the mid notes linger longer than the finish.
Mouth feel- neither oily or dry/ astringent, the mouth does take a subtle coating- warm but not excessive. It’s a middle body citrusy mouth feel.
Finish- upper sternum Kentucky hug that is not overpowering and lingers for about 5-10 minutes after a sip. Cornbread and clover notes in the finish.
At $59 a 750ml bottle this is not a bargain, but it is a great example of mid complexity bourbons that hang out around this price point. The Name is an eye catcher- this is definitely made for event hosting.
