Rhum agricole has been produced at the Bellevue Distillery on Guadeloupe since the end of the 19th century, and by the Damoiseau family at that distillery since the 1940s. Their VSOP is made from fresh, island-grown sugarcane juice that is aged a minimum of 4 years in ex-bourbon casks that have been re-charred for extra flavor.
Rhum Agricole VieuxRhum distilled from fresh sugarcane juice that has been aged in oak in barrels not to exceed 650 liters. In Martinique, aging requirements are at least 3 years for a VO designation, 4 years for VSOP, 6 for XO, and at least 6 for vintage rhums. Hors d'age is aged between 8-12 years.
"This smooth sipper has the fresh, herbal flavors of rhum agricole melding with rich burnt caramel, roasted coffee, stewed fruits, vanilla and butterscotch. Considering the rhums used are somewhat young, it has a mature and elegant feel with sharp notes of funk, kind of like an early Adele song. This is fine to sip neat, but would make some truly delicious stirred cocktails."
