The first single malt expression to be released by Speyside Distillery, Drumguish was later bottled as Glentromie and Spey whisky. Its distiller, George Christie, had established the North of Scotland grain distillery in 1957, but sought to create his own malt distillery.

He founded The Speyside Distillery in 1962. Built near Kingussie, the distillery was finished in 1987, but whisky production didn't begin until three years later in 1990.
