Excellia Tequila Reposado
Los Altos, Jalisco, Mexico
Excellia is a project created by EWG Spirits & Wine founder Jean-Sébastien Robicquet and master tequila producer Carlos Carmarena, combining traditional tequila with the technique of wine cask aging. The reposado was aged 9 months in a combination of grand cru Sauternes and Cognac barrels, using agave that is 8 - 10 years old at harvest.
Tequila ReposadoDistilled from 100% blue Weber agave, it is aged from 2 months up to a year in barrels no larger than 20,000 L. Any type of wood is acceptable, although ex-bourbon barrels are most common. Reposado translates to "rested".
"Warm stewed fruits, raisins and bananas contribute to the richness of this reposado style. It’s further sweetened by vanilla, honey and sweet spices, with some of the rancio qualities imparted by the cognac barrel. A touch of thyme reminds this is still an agave spirit, though that is much heavier than most in this category."
