Water is added to bring the spirit down to as low as 37.5% ABV in the EU and 40% ABV in the US. It is usually filtered, often with charcoal, prior to bottling. It is almost always clear and unaged.

"Mostly neutral grain spirit aromas, with some lemon peel poking through as well as fresh newsprint. It enters clean, with a slight anise and herbal tang joining the lemon quality. On the sweet side rather than crisp, and finishes persistently citric and sweet. "
