Tasty, but not much after taste

Nose-dark/light fruit, slight tobacco, little barrel, smoke comes more forward after the first sip. Taste-initial candy sweet then peach, pear then mild peat smoke. Finishes with a mild Peat and tobacco. Pleasant to sip. Doesn't change too much with ice.

The aromas and flavors seem akin to JW Black, but fuller and stronger, and with a peatier backbone. No water's needed and it's quite quaffable at an ABV of 46%. Priced at $35 USD, this is a commendable VFM that competently showcases a medium peated bourbon-cask profile. At similar price points, the Loch Lomond 12 proves to be a scrupulous SM alternative to the blended JW Double Black -- but with an extra bump in alcohol content. The nose is rich with a nice balance of Sherry and old socks. There's a bit of something floral and mineral coming through. The palate has some Sherry fruit, but less than expected. The mouthfeel is moderate with some slightly watery elements. There's a bit of citrus harshness they belies the youth and bleeds into the general niceness, but there's still some nice malt and grassiness - a bit like miss with some wet cardboard flavor. It's good for a 12, but it's a bit off-kilter with its flavor. It's certainly better than Glenfarclas 12 though. For the price, it's a pretty good choice, comparing favorably with Glenmorangie 10. Glen Moray port would probabaly be my personal go-to, but this might be a hair less risky.
