As the label would suggest, the wood/smoke aroma and taste are at the forefront but not over powering. There is a nuttiness and a sweetness in the background that is very complex on the tongue....maybe pecan or walnut with some combo of maple, vanilla, and.....birthday cake maybe?!?!?! Lack of rye is evident. If you like other Maker's and Weller this whiskey is a safe buy. Not to say it was or wasn't my favorite, in a recent sampling of ~10 or so bourbons, I found myself sniffing, sipping, and enjoying this longer than any of the others.
