Dark RumAKA Black Rum. Usually aged (but not always) and has additional caramel-coloring added to provide the dark/black color. Some are distilled from blackstrap molasses. No specific type or size barrel required for aging nor is there a set time required for aging in most countries with a few exceptions.

"The aroma of the rum shows notes of caramel, a pop of butterscotch, cinnamon, and baking spices, but is overall dominated by acrid oak tannin. The tasting profile reveals flavors of prunes, toffee, molasses, apricot, burnt sugar, overcooked bananas, and cinnamon. It balances against the acidic char of the oak and bitter salt notes in the base. Not one recommended as a sipper, but instead as a quality cocktail ingredient."
