Reviewed December 22, 2020Scorched caramel and prominent warm rye spice dominate the palate. Some orange rind and some hot pepper as well floating in the background. The alcohol balance is a little out of whack and drinks a touch hot for the 114.2 ABV. This SKU gets a ton of hot press, maybe this wasn't the barrel for me... -

Reviewed October 14, 2020 (edited April 26, 2022)Nose: menthol cherry cough drop, dill, caraway seed, and ethanol. Least favorite part of my experience, but the best was yet to come. Palate: cherry menthol cough drop fades to marzipan Christmas candy. There is ground nutmeg, and some hard cinnamon candy. A few drops of water give up butterbrickle, and a bit of praline. Really enjoyable. Finish: long and lasting. It is warming with a punch of sweet tart candy and oaky barrel. Love the finish. Overall: Really enjoyed this 4 1/2 yr old rye. Once I got past the menthol on the nose which was a bit "cherry smelling Ben-Gay" it just got really good sip after sip. Huber's Starlight Distillery is no stranger to distillation being a powerhouse for quality Brandy. They barrel delicious wine and their foray into rye and bourbon is dead on. The fact that they have never sourced and are bringing out something of this quality has put them on my distilleries to watch list and they should be on yours. Quality product from Indiana.
