Virginia Distillery Co. Courage & Conviction Dr. Jim Swan Batch
American Single Malt
Virginia Distillery Co. // Virginia, USA
The second in Virginia Distillery's Courage & Conviction series, released in August 2020, is an homage to the late Dr. Jim Swan, a Scotch whisky distiller, scientist and educator who was one of the distillery's original consultants and had worked on this release. 100% malted barley distilled on site was matured in a combination of ex-bourbon, ex-European wine ("cuvée") and sherry (fino, oloroso and PX) casks, which were subject to very warm summers and cool winters between 2016 and 2020.
The final ratio of cask selection was 50% bourbon casks with 25% each of the cuvée and sherry casks, with a portion of this batch held for the next one. The Dr. Jim Swan Batch of Courage & Conviction produced 1,650 cases of 750mL bottles, or 9,900 bottles, according to the distillery.

Tasting Notes
"Much like the 1st release, there is a strong presence of hoppy florals on the nose and palate, particularly orange blossom and green tea, which are a giveaway that this is American and not Scottish single malt. Though it still tastes very much like a single malt in other respects, capturing the marshmallow, vanilla, creamy caramel, cocoa, ginger and baking spices one associates with a good Speyside. Some additional peach and mango come through with additional sips, that lead to a medium finish. "
