The nose is like no other bourbon, namely boozy sweet and sour. It transforms and leads the nose into a zone where dense confectionary sweetness and booze, mix like liquor-filled chocolates. The palate is chocolate cake with sour maraschino cherries.
UPDATE: Add a teaspoon of water and I'm drinking red wine with chocolate cake. Not as intense and well defined as the OF 1910, but still, at under $50 - this is a nice VFM bottle.
My Rating Glossary:
Two Stars: "I'd rather be drinking lite beer."
Two 1/2 Stars: "Posh rubbish."
Three Stars: "I love whisk(e)y. This is average love."
Three 1/2 Stars: "May buy again."
Four Stars: "I've got to get you into my life."
Four 1/2 Stars: "Better than drugs."
Five Stars: "Life is good. Whisky makes it better."
The nose is deep cherry with well-balanced oak and vanilla. Caramel, vanilla, and a hint of orange wrap around each other throughout the palate, giving the double oak finish a touch of rich desert texture. Honey notes are introduced late, adding to its warmth and evenly smooth progression, drinking long and comforting. Straight or in your favorite Manhattan recipe, this bourbon won’t disappoint.
After reading plenty of accolades I decided to grab one and see for myself. Just an FYI, I'm still green to this wonderful hobby. So take my review as you see fit.
Neat: Aroma was decadent. Butterscotch and/or caramel all the way. Vanilla joins in later. Palate was almost syrupy sweet with minimal heat. Caramel and spice up front with expected oak on the back end. Subtle notes of leather lingered after a few sips.
Ice block: Definitely dulls the small burn it had. Thickens the mouthfeel somewhat. Decreased the sugary sweetness and brought out the wood/oak more. Made it more linear.
IMO I'd prefer this beverage neat to appreciate the complexities to the fullest. Out of my 4 different reviews/bourbons thus far, I'd say this was my favorite. Very solid and highly recommend to have in your collection at all times.
