Hatozaki Japanese Blended Whisky
Blended — Japan

Extremely light color. Thin.
Creamy vanilla syrup with a gentle green apple. Actually quite pleasant, but forgettable and nothing worth seeking out. More like a sweet soda than a whisky.
No layers, but probably just fine to introduce a neophyte. Not sure where the brother in law dug this up or for what price. Considering it probably is quite affordable, truly not complaining. I’d drink it, but not on purpose.

@Ancient33w probably. It’s a new distillery, low aging and majority grain (40% malt). I think it’s just the <$40 mass-market offering which is essentially bottom shelf for Japanese whisky at today’s prices. Could easily work well in a highball, I’d just keep the dilution to a minimum otherwise you’re liable to lose all flavor (unless thats what you’re going for!)
Interesting review sir. I wonder if it was meant for mixed drinks like High Balls?
