Tanqueray Malacca Gin

Distilled Gin — Scotland

I finally pulled the trigger and bought this gin a little while back and I am so glad that I did. I am not generally a fan of the original Tanqueray nor the Tanqueray No 10 as they tend to be too peppery on the finish for my liking. In a few of my classic cocktail books, it does reference "Orange Gin" and they give Tanqueray Malacca as a substitute for that. On the nose and in the glass it is wonderful the juniper and citrus are right there waiting on you. Then there is the faint scent of peppercorns which worried me at first but they never overpowered the gin. The body is very smooth for a gin and could be sipped with some ice. The finish is citrusy and clean with just a touch of herbs and maybe peppercorns. Now to the cocktails, this gin makes one of the most impressive Martinni's I have ever tasted but you do have to be very careful with the vermouth. I do a 3:1 ratio of gin to vermouth and add a few dashes of orange bitters and stir it until cold. The first one was a touch heavy on the vermouth but I really watched the amount used for the second and it was outstanding. In a Gin and Tonic, the flavor can be washed away very easily so be careful but again the citrus in this is wonderful. The only real criticism of this gin is that the proof is low I wish it were between 90 and 100 proof I think it would stand up to the other flavors better. In my area of SC, it is around $30 for a liter so the price is good but with Fords and Roku this is a tough one to buy repeatedly. Enjoy.
