Bottle kill tasting here. This has had a lot of air.
N: Spicy, herbal, a hair floral, kind of rich with some clear wood notes that carry with them a bit of dry dirt. It smells really nicely balanced, but not terribly sophisticated.
P: Sweeter and fruitier (mainly apple) than the nose suggests with more mineral, but still quite spicy and herbal. Maybe a little more floral than the nose suggests as well. I get hints of licorice and dill in here. The wood starts coming through, adding maturity and filling out the backing layer here. The balance is very good. This tastes mature, but still a bit on the youthful side, sort of like Whistlepig PiggyBack in that regard.
F: Kind of rich and sweet with muddled herbal, and other flavors. It's an uninspiring, but not bad, finish.
- Conclusion -
This is a really good rye that dos not reach the level of great. It's in this pack that clusters around 16.
This could be either a 15 or a 16. Whistlepig PiggyBack is a 16 to 17 and it's clearly better. Whistlepig 15 is a 14 to 15 and it's clearly worse. I'm going to maintain my 16 here, but it's a low 16 and this isn't a very interesting whiskey. I'm sticking with my 16 for now, but this is seriously teetering. I suspect that a new bottle would be a 15.
