Old Pulteney 15 Year
Single Malt — Highlands, Scotland

Noses with orange blossom honey, tart apple, pie crust. On the nose I don’t think I get any of the salty note that I associate with Pulteney. By way of suggestion, maybe very faintly. The mouthfeel has a nice oiliness. Honey builds into some spice on the back end. Toffee. A little fruit shows up on the finish. I may be talking myself into an ever-so-slight salty note, but it’s certainly not prominent. Good whisky. Good value at the $70 I paid for it. I think I’m in the 3.75-4 range.

@angstrom I can send a sample of the 15 if you want to compare all 3.
@Scott_E Nice! I may have to take you up on that offer.
@angstrom honestly, get them all
@angstrom I should be able to get you a sample of the 17 and 21 if you want.
@angstrom fortunately for me I was aware they were going to discontinue and at that time I found what was left on the shelves. That was around 2018
@DrRHCMadden I have the 10 yr, Sauternes, and Bothy. Local store also has Amarone, Port, Sherry, and 18 yr. Figured since the 18 yr also has a strong sherry influence, it has a slight edge on the others. Admittedly for double the price.
@cascode Awesome background. Wonder if the wheels fell off on where they can source their casks.
@Scott_E Did you find those recently?
@angstrom I was able to snag (2) of the 17 YO and (2) of the 21’s. Was on a mission. Found them for a rather favorable price. The 12 was bottled at 46% abv and was easily found for under $50. Disheartened to learn that the current is just a shadow of it’s former self. However, been fortunate to have experienced them in their prime.
@PBMichiganWolverine @cascode I never really thought about it that way. Unfortunately the logic seems sound. “All that glitters is not gold”
@cascode sad, but wholly accurate analysis.
Pulteney is not the distillery it used to be. Sometimes a change of livery and lineup is just cosmetic or a minor repositioning for marketing reasons, but when a distillery cuts their entire existing range and comes up with a totally new core lineup it is down to one of three things: a naive new owning company, a brilliant new master blender, or something deeply troublesome about the warehouse stock. In Pulteney’s case they have been owned by Inver house for ages and Stuart Harvey has been at the blender’s bench for most of that time. So that leaves explanation number three …
@soonershrink I covet a barrel.
@DrRHCMadden coveting your tasty shelf.
@soonershrinkthe bodega is a brighter and punchier counterpart to the 18 IMO. Just got my Argonne limited bottling imported after winning it at auction. I’m pained to open it! Have a shelf just of Arran now. Exceptional liquids.
@DrRHCMadden yeah, the Bothy and Bodega are both on my list too.
@angstrom Arran 18 is great, but for the cost you could likely get the full suite of NAS barrel finishes or the Bodega and Bothy with cash to spare. 18 is great, but push coming to shove, I’d rather have the range. I do have the range. So will get an 18 and 21 when I can! Ha.
@soonershrink thanks for this review--I've never had this and will have to try. Not to hijack the thread, but @angstrom Edradour 10 is one of my favorites--IMHO you should have it high in that "to try" list!
@angstrom I have a bottle of the Edradour 10 currently. I think I gave them both 3.75, but they’re very different. The Edradour is a very earthy oloroso-heavy scotch. I think it’s more unique and interesting, but the Pulteney is more drinkable on the regular. I’d similarly like to get the Arran 18. It’d be high on my list.
@soonershrink Hmmm. I think this is enough to knock OP 15 yr out of my “next 5 bottles of scotch” list. Moving Edradour 10 yr up a spot. Need to buy HP 15 yr, Arran18 yr, Craigellachie 13 yr, GM NdO, and now Edradour. Only Glenmo is a repeat (well, technically, I last had it when there was an age statement).
I think 2 regular years is like 14 whiskey-years.
@angstrom A couple years ago I had a bottle of the old Old Pulteney 12 that was a higher ABV than the current. Seems like the current 15 is a hair better than I remember the old 12, but that was a lot of whiskey-years ago.
@angstrom @Scott_E the old 17 and 21 were some of my favorites. From the little I gathered, I think the new versions aren’t the same quality. I’ve not tried any of the new ones, though.
@Scott_E Loved the old OP 12 yr. Newer bottling just don’t seem the same. Wish I would have picked up the 17 and 21 a decade ago.
I’m on the fence about getting this one. Current in my Top 5 list of scotch to buy next. But Is $90 here.
I haven’t had any of the newer versions of OP. But the “original” 12, 17 and 21 were crazy good. Some of the best scotches I have had. Especially the 21.
