I’ve had my eyes on this for a while, but was always skeptical to buy it. I generally find Canadian whiskey a bit too mild, and as if they simply just need more time in barrel. The ones I did enjoy had more oomph and swagger, but I find those far and few.
This was one generously sent by @pkingmartin.
Aroma of green apple, vanilla pudding. Solid grain backbone.
Taste is not as spicy as I expected…mild almost. Maple, rye bread. Not showing it’s 65% at all.
Overall, a solid offering. Middle of the road for me. I’d not go out hunting for it , but given it’s just under $40, you simply can’t go wrong. At that price, it beats the competition.
Thanks @pkingmartin for the pour!

@Zachary-Robbins I’d imagine that 16yr pick must be amazing. I just tried looking for the 20yr version. Discontinued unfortunately
@PBMichiganWolverine My bourbon club did a Barrell Rye pick last year that was nearly 16Y Alberta rye and roughly the same proof as this, it was fantastic. The rye needs a few more years for the fruit to come out and the pepper and heat to be less harsh.
@Zachary-Robbins yeah, at $40, I thought it’s a no-brainer to have around. There’s a 20 and 30 yr version of Alberta Premium ( probably not rye though), which I think is Canada only or discontinued. I can imagine that being amazing.
Under $40? That's crazy low, normally around $80 in the 3 states I've seen it. Great mixer at $40, bad at $80. It's too young for me, needs a few more years.
@pkingmartin wow…I’d pass for $75. But here it’s $40. Definite buy at that price
An enjoyable high proof rye but not a whiskey of the year IMO. These go for $75 near me, but at $40 I’d certainly grab a few to make some Canadian old fashioneds out of.
