I got this in the mail yesterday as part of the Flaviar sample. (been as subpar experience so far with them...but, that's for another time). This one really lacked a personality. On paper it had the right things going for it, but just didn't deliver. Sort of like that kid with the great SAT scores who got into a really good school, but then flunked out his first year. The nose was a bit like burnt grass or hay, mixed with some sort of floral. Palette was a bit weak...oak was the forefront and you can tell it's young and not quite ready. Finish is short and sharp. I'd definitely not buy a full bottle.

On a side but related note...Scott, Dave---I'm sensing a business opportunity! If I divide up my 100 or so up bottles into small 10ml sample sizes, and have folks select which they want to sample on a website---I'm sure I can make a killing! And I'll free up some real estate space in my house. ;-)
Scott: next month's (May) Flaviar tasting seems to be all whisky----Glenkinchie 12, Dalwhinnie 15, and Talisker Port Ruige. I might actually not skip this one...seems interesting.
Dave, I perused Masters, but I don't think it works for me or at least what I want, ideally. Shipping costs to U.S. can be high. I see Caskers has a whiskey club with several options, just don't know, yet, if this works for me. I just don't know if I have any input into what is delivered, which is what I would like. Choose from a pool of which one(s) I would want to sample and not blindly be delivered something that does not interest me.
Scott, have you checked out MasterOfMalt.com? I haven't used them yet, but it seems like a great way to get samples, as long as you buy enough to make the shipping worthwhile.
Yeah, I was under the same impression Scott. But fortunately they do have an option to "skip" a month. So for example, if next month's delivery will be 1 Islay, 1 rum, and 1 gin---you can skip and they won't charge you $25. You can do this indefinately. So, I kinda held on to my membership, since no downside and I end up skipping months that don't interest me. (They tell you in advance what next month's delivery will be).
I was under the impression you choose the the type of spirit that interests you and they send you samples in that spirit type. I, too, would not be interested in another unless I specify. Thanks for the information.
Concur with Pranay regarding Flaviar. Been waiting for them to wow me..The SAT reference applies to Flaviar too. Their packaging and materials are excellent. But the choices are subpar. "Sort of like that kid with the great SAT scores who got into a really good school, but then flunked out his first year."
Scott: I think it's pretty good if you're into a wide array of spirits---like gin, rum, tequila, whiskey, etc. But in my personal case, I seem to only like whiskey (and red wine). So, I find the choices there not so varied. And in pack of 3, I end up getting 1 whiskey and 2 things I don't like. For example, the last delivery was "smoke", which had a smoky vodka, a mescal, and this Ardmore. I ended up not liking the vodka, spat out the mescal, and found the Ardmore so-so.
Curious about your experience with Flaviar and what has been subpar. The service looks interesting and thought about it but haven't taken that leap.
Love the SAT reference.
