The nose starts with rich charred oak, vanilla, brown sugar, a touch of molasses sweetness and earthy spice. It comes across more smooth than spicy, but still packs a subtle punch. 118 proof is pretty decent for a cask aged bourbon this old. After a few moments, the earthy spice starts to turn a little more floral, adding to the depth of this.
The palate is dry yet chewy, giving a burst of oak, cherry and intense baking spices. Further sips give a certain fruitiness to it, leaning towards banana. It is reminiscent of Barton whiskey, as that is one of the few bourbons that offer banana as a tasting note. It is very easy to drink, as with each sip the spice subsides a bit more. This allows you to enjoy the depth of the creamy oakiness.
The finish is long and chewy, with lingering oak and heat, with each two extracting more flavor. Maybe not the most intense flavor profile for bourbon of this age, but it is still full and very enjoyable. Perhaps proofed down a little bit might bring out some interesting flavors, however this is still good on its own. Is it worth the price? Maybe not as this doesn't exactly blow you away. Would still make an excellent addition to the collection as this is something you've got to drink more of and spend even more time with, to appreciate it.
