Starlight Single Barrel Huber's Old Rickhouse Rye Finished in Cognac Barrels (Roc Elite barrel no 22-2431-1)
Rye — Indiana , USA
Reviewed April 25, 2024The nose is a burst of cognac with charred oak and vanilla, with hints of spearmint and fruity rye. It is very fresh and tantalizing. The fullness is off the charts given the relatively young age of this whiskey, really bringing you in to taste it. The palate is rich and full, yet dry and chewy. Cognac is upfront along with a burst of pepper, fruit and floral rye. The initial tasting is very intense yet gives way to oak and vanilla to smooth things out on the back end. The flavors are incredibly distinct and powerful, in perfect proportions. The finish is long and sweet with cognac, oak and vanilla swirl around in the background as flavor clings to all corners of the mouth. The intensity of how simple this is, is what makes it remarkable. The perfect blend of cognac and rye and a real treat, just like a dessert. -
The nose is soft with charred oak, vanilla, fresh fruit and just the slightest bit of smoke. Its very gentle, much softer than you would expect for six years and 100 proof. It is somewhat inviting however. The palate starts with a slight bite of baking spices, giving way to some dryness. Chewy oak and vanilla follow with faint touches fresh fruit offering a sweet freshness. It is indeed rather simple, yet very attractive in how easy it is to drink. It is a great blend of age and proof, offering more fullness than the standard Rebel offering. The finish is medium long with a lingering dryness with the spice going flat as the oaky smoothness lingers. Rather tasty and effortlessly enjoyable. This is a great one to have on hand.

Boone County Eighteen33 Straight Bourbon 10 Year
Bourbon — (bottled in Kentucky), USA
Reviewed April 14, 2024 (edited April 15, 2024)The nose is vibrant with oak and citrus, there is plenty of brown sugar sweetness with hints of vanilla immediately following. As it breathes, the citrus quickly takes over while being balanced by oak. It is very fresh and bright, certainly does not imply that it is a decade old. The palate is gentle and full of oak. It doesn't coat the mouth, but rather stays to where to put it. In those places, it becomes chewy which really brings out the citrus. Vanilla and brown sugar round it out in the background, but overall keeps this rather simple. Simple isn't a bad thing as long as it is done right. This is done right, but you might expect a bit more oak for its age and proof. A great, full bodied sipper, but a bit more complexity would be nice. The finish is medium and while the mouth stays tingling for a bit, the flavors quickly fade. First the sweetness, then the spice. Oak is the dominant after taste, but overall the need for more depth holds this back a bit, -

Buffalo Trace Single Barrel Select (Astor Wines and Spirits NYC)
Bourbon — Kentucky , USA
Reviewed March 25, 2024 (edited March 26, 2024)The nose is full of oak and ripe fruit, with fresh vibrant flowers following along with touches of vanilla. It's strong on fresh citrus, along with touches of honey and straw. The palate is very gentle, allowing you to swirl It endlessly as oak and vanilla gently coat the mouth before giving way to a burst of rye spice. Slight hints of rape fruitiness comes out at the very end to round this out. This more or less fits the profile for Buffalo Trace, except being a single barrel makes the flavors just a bit more intense and rich. That is the joy of this offering is that for the price you can get something so wonderful. The finish is medium long with the spiciness fading disappointingly quick but leaving a nice aftertaste of oak, vanilla, rye and the slightest hint of fresh fruit. Pretty wonderful to sit on and a great offering of Kentucky bourbon. -
Four Roses Single Barrel Select (NHLO OESV 10 yr 8 m)
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed March 25, 2024 (edited March 26, 2024)The nose is vibrant and full of charred oak, floral rye, a touch of spearmint and vanilla, and fresh fruit. The nose does come across a bit simple but it is very inviting. Its fresh and rich and unmistakably Four Roses. The palate can be swirled around for quite some time before a burst of black pepper kicks in, lighting up the entire mouth. Sharp oak and vanilla fill the mouth as rye spice comes in behind it all. The rye loses its floral notes and comes off as mostly spicy, yet for as spicy as this is, there is also a wonderful smoothness to it. The finish is long and spicy, and very chewy. Oak and vanilla fade in the background as the mouth tingles from each sip. -
The nose is a swirl charred oak, vanilla, molasse and a touch of cherry. Its very smooth and gentle, yet very inviting. The palate is dry, yet smooth and covers the front of the mouth in pepper. Sharp notes of oak reach the corners of the mouth while smooth and creamy notes fill the rest of the mouth. Slighty sweet notes of brown sugar come in at the end, but this remains a pretty simple whiskey. The finish is medium yet enjoyable. It stays somewhat peppery while smooth oak lingers in the mouth, offering a bit of a chew.

The nose is a burst of floral rye, perfectly matched by charred oak that quickly gives way vanilla and brown sugar. It is absolutely intoxicating and surprisingly offers no burn no matter much you take it in. The palate is light and oily and immediately fills the mouth with an intense burst of black pepper. It is immediately chewy and oaky vanilla fills the corner of the mouth. This is rich, full and intense, and while not exactly complex, it is those factors that make this stunning. Everything is perfectly balanced and addicting. The finish is medium long and rich, with chewy pepperiness and oak lingering. As soon as you take a sip, you're already looking forward to the next. This is remarkable, but held back a bit by the finish that ends too soon.
