Tamdhu has always been on my radar. I’ve heard and researched well, so the expectations are big.
It’s hard to compare brands, but I had a fairly good amount of Speyside options and I do have my favorites.
A friend of mine was flying through Heathrow and brought this bottle out of my recommendation. This bottle was aged in 4 different sherry casks, so I was very excited for it.
We just cracked it open and I have to say I’m underwhelmed. This is not what I was expecting. So, let’s talk about the positives first:
On the nose: Big sherry influence. Interestingly enough I got cherry cola, butterscotch, dried fruits, some honey as well. The nose is very promising!
On the palate: now that’s the problem with such a low ABV. 41.2% doesn’t deliver the flavors we get on the nose. It’s so mild that we really need to make an effort to get the flavors that we’re supposed to. So, the butterwcotch is gone, cherry is gone and all we get is a mild honey with charred oak if we push it hard. The finish is the charred oak with a bit of spice, but it’s so mild I can’t distinguish the spice I’m getting. Maybe cinnamon, but very mild. The finish doesn’t last much.
This is a bit sad to me as I was about to buy some Tamdhu. At this point I need to be convinced that I need to buy a Tamdhu. For now, Ill stick with Benromach, Craigellachie, Glenallachie and Macallan when I have the chance.
Cheers
