The silver lining to the cloud overhanging the bourbon industry is that many previously hard-to-find whiskies are (slowly) becoming more available. I've seen this with Elijah Craig 18 year (which I reviewed a short while ago), with E.H. Taylor Single Barrel, and other whiskies. Economically speaking, a product or service is worth what the market will bear--and anyone who ******* or gripes about the price is just that--a ******* or griper. I get it: I've been a ******* and a griper. I've lamented the rise in prices and the scarcity of whiskies that I used to be able to find, including this one. I recently found this bottle of E.H Taylor Single Barrel (I've had several over the years, but had run out). And when I saw it, I grabbed it. It wasn't at secondary pricing--but it wasn't retail. Something in between. Honestly, I don't remember the exact price. I have a lot of whiskey--but I'm not a "collector." Back in the day, I traded a lot of of it. I bought it not to trade, but to drink, because I liked it, and I like to have inventory of what I actually like. It just so happened that a lot of my whiskey's value rose significantly, and I parlayed that into other bottles that I was unable to find elsewhere at the time. As a result, I was able to try other whiskies that had become scarce, whether they were actually good or not. So back to this whiskey--bourbon, actually. E.H. Taylor Single Barrel is objectively good, irrespective of the price. Goodness, beauty, sensual satisfaction, whatever it is--those things are not a function of price. That's what value is: value is perceived "goodness" relative to price. But I digress. I love this bourbon. There's so much going on: baked apples, chocolate covered cherries, root beer, caramel, wax candy, a little licorice. Lots of vanilla on the finish. E.H. Taylor Single Barrel is good, and the 100 proof adds a nice Kentucky Hug--this is bourbon, after all. Would I buy it again? Yes, at the right price--at the right price I'd like cases of it. 4.5 on the Distiller scale.
