I had a dram of this one tonight at my niece's sweet 16 at Ming (No, the kids were allowed only water and soda. I bought this on my own) When the bartender opened the bottle, I actually overheard someone a few feet away say " do you smell rubber burning?" Yes, this is a pure classic. A must have. Even if you don't like Islay scotch, you need to try this just once. Either you love it, or you hate it. No middle ground on this one.

haha I love that story
Funny. Sometimes I wonder though that is it that our taste buds have evolved, or have they de-evolved? I can't drink anything now except red wine and whisky. Anything else just doesn't taste good. Maybe we've killed off those taste and smell receptors that appreciate a Bud Light or Coors. Not that I'm complaining
I was out with friends and ordered a Laphroag 10. My buddies couldn't take the fragrance - as they drank their Coors and Buds
@GeologyJack: I'm surprised you were able to manage a Lag16 early on! One of my early ones was a Caol Ila Diageo Special release. It's not even that peaty, but I remember hating it so much that I spat it out. I couldn't fathom throwing away such an expensive bottle (the Diageo special releases are very expensive), so I gave it to a homeless guy in NYC. I'm sure he didn't pontificate much on the significance of having the Diageo release, but probably just swigged it all down and passed out. Hopefully he at least enjoyed it.
The Lag 16 was the first peat I tasted. It was a little hard to take having only recently acquired my taste for whisky. But I knew I wanted to go there.
Looking forward to your notes. Lag8 has not crossed my path and I am very curious about that too. Love the DE and the Lag16 is great. Open it soon and let us know.
I have a Lagavulin 8 at home...I'm curious to see now if the peat level in that is even more than this. I'm almost now in this quest to see where is the "too peaty" for me line.
Lol. That's exactly it with the Peaty's, as I also tell me friends: You either love it (peat) or hate it. I have found there is no middle road. Overall, a wonderful dram. Glad you enjoyed.
