Single Malt — Japan

I opened up my Drinks by the Dram sample I got quite a while back from U.K. I thought it fitting while watching tonight's Jets game vs Colts. The burnt ember aroma symbolic of this seasons Jets team. I'm a huge fan of Yoichi, and still have fond memories of their 20 and 10. This NAS versions tricks you; the burnt aroma made me think I'm going to experience the 10 or 20 all over again. I was WRONG. Sly little devil tricked me. The aroma doesn't carry through into the palette. Really falls apart there. Weak orchard fruits and citrus. I'm not getting the same coal smoke infused flavors as I did in the 10 or 20. Finish is worse. Just bitter. I know there's no replicating 10 or 15 yr olds overnight, and there was no way to forecast the high demand that suddenly showed up for Japanese whiskies, but NAS versions like this truly does it a disservice.

Nikka might be bringing back age statements in 2020
After having tasted this NAS expression more thoroughly, I must withdraw my initial criticism. YES, this is not the 10- or 15-year-old Yoichi which impressed connoisseurs around the world while it was still available. Having a strong opinion regarding NAS expressions, I am not admitting this lighthearted, but Yoichi NAS is actually well-worth a try. Review will follow shortly.
This was their choice??! I guess that critic's and my palette are vastly opposite.
So much for Whisky Advocate's Japanese whisky of the year.
It was a tough game to watch. For Jets fans, thank goodness there are only a few games left.
Scott: 41-10 Colts. Imagine if Andrew Luck wasn't playing with a post concussion, or if the Colts actually did have an offensive line. Would've been 100-10.
I really had high hopes for this one, specifically because of the amazing quality of its 10/15/20 yr olds. It's really a shame the Japanese whiskies are going through this. Was it because of that one year Jim Murray ranked Yamazaki Sherry as best in world? Amazing one man can move the industry like that.
It's a shame that Nikka stopped producing Yoichi's with age statement. I tried the 15-year-old at the distillery and fairly enjoyed it. The NAS version is available at all convenience stores in Japan for less than $10 (for a 20 cl bottle) - and the taste perfectly reflects this.
Thanks for saving me the money...this was next on the list to find and buy.
Funny analogy to the Jets season.
