I had a bit of a rough, overnight shift at work outside in the elements dealing with freezing temps and the leftover snow from this past weekend's snow storm. I took a bit of a slip and fall when climbing down out of a fork truck and really strained my back, while slightly twisting my ankle. Needless to say, I need a pain reliever this morning and I can either choose whisky or ibuprofen. Of course, I chose whisky. This is another 50ml sample bottle of Old Pulteney 12 Year. It's 86 proof and a nice, golden yellow in the taster.
The nose is very bourbon-esque. I get a tiny floral note but it's mostly oak and toffee/caramel sweetness. On the tongue there's a massive peppery bite and a bit of roasted almonds/nuts. The finish is medium length and the heat from the proof sticks around for a little while. I feel like this is a really good bourbon and with a price point around $40-45 it also costs about the same. Since I love scotch more than bourbon whiskey I think this would be an easier choice for me. Your mileage may vary, but this isn't a bad dram by any means. 3.5-3.75 stars. Cheers.

This is one of my favorites. Curious to compare my original review to the current bottling to compare consistency. Great whisky. Great price.
@ Mikael- the original review and injury were from back in January of this year but sadly, I've had ankle issues since I was a teen. I can't seem to go longer than a month or two before the slightest misstep or trip really gets me hobbled again and again. I pretty much wear a brace while playing golf and working just as an added precaution. Getting older isn't helping, either lol.
Lee great update to the review, what about an update on your injury? Feeling better?
Sept 2017: Just a brief update to my original review, as this sample was provided for our distillery sample group by Scott. Thanks, my friend. This bad boy sure makes some silky legs in the Glencairn. Nose is slightly floral with lots of sweet vanilla and toffee present. Fresh cut oak hides in the background. Silky smooth on the tongue until the oak takes over on the trailing edge. Pretty oily and thick overall mouthfeel. Finish is medium length and warming. I added a drop of water just for kicks and all I really noticed was it muted the floral tones on the nose and killed the oak wash on the tongue. I don't believe it added anything worthwhile to the overall tasting. It's still a solid dram worthy of 3.5-3.75 stars.
I don't know if the OP will help with healing but it definitely gets you in the right frame of mind. Hope you're feeling better soon.
Thanks guys. The fact that 2-3" of snow here in Virginia closes schools, businesses, etc for almost a week, the foot we got on Saturday is truly apocalyptic in scale, lol. Over 90% of the people I work with don't show up for work and that left me not only doing my normal job but also pitching in on snow and ice removal. It also lead to forced overtime, which is "awesome" (sarc). All will be forgiven next payday (aka new scotch on the way!), but tell that to my aching back today.
Yeah, sorry to hear that!
Nice review, cheers to a speedy recovery!
Well, that sucks...sorry to hear it. On the plus side, you could do a lot worse for drams to nurse you back to good health.
Oh my god...sounds horrible! (the fall, pain, and ankle...not the whisky).
