Old Pulteney 12 Year
Old Pulteney // Highlands, Scotland
Old Pulteney Distillery is located in the far north of the Scottish mainland. Wick is an area rich in maritime history, once known for its herring fisheries, and the distillery's opening coincided with this boom in the fishing trade. The fishing industry all but died out there, but the distillery has long endured. Fun fact: the shape of the bottle with the bulbous neck is a reflection of the unique stills, which are missing the traditional "swan neck" because they were too tall for the original still house. This single malt is matured entirely in American oak ex-bourbon barrels, mostly second-fill. This 12 year-old bottling is part of the brand's core range of whiskies which received an updated look in August 2018 along with three new expressions.
Single MaltDistilled in pot stills from 100% malted barley, produced at one distillery, aged in barrels; if Scotch or Irish, must be aged for at least three years.
"Have always considered this one a true crowd pleaser because it's not too smoky or too sweet. A great choice if you're not sure which direction you want to sip in. The maritime influences do give it a slight dry, smoky, briny edge, but this is well tempered with rich toffee, nutty, vanilla and dark chocolate flavors, some citrus peel in the finish. It's a great old friend to know, especially on a cold, rainy night. A massive bargain too!"
