Fresh vanilla bean, marzipan, and light floral note on the nose. Mouthwatering burst of citrus, velvety malt and honey on the palate. The finish is gently fruity, spiced, and of medium length. Simply elegant. Domo arigato.

@ Mikael : Thanks for adding this neat feature! After all of these suggestions, I may have to set up a special wishlist just for Japanese whiskys!
@Mikael: LMAO
I just bought a bottle of this one. Hope to open it soon. Looking forward to it more after this review
Maybe add this one to a new custom list in Distiller! (Shameless plug for new feature released today, be sure to update!)
The 18 is simply amazing. I bought a bottle way back when it was only $80. Now it's as much as a mortgage payment!
If you can find it I recommend a bottle of YAMAZAKI 12 YEAR OLD SINGLE MALT WATAMI PRESIDENT’S CHOICE . It is a more sherried verson of the 12 yo. I have a bottle and it is fantastic.
@ Slàinte Mhath : You made the wise move to stock up! Apparently, there's a liquor store in Plattsburgh NY (near Canadian border) that's selling the Yamazaki 12 for $94 USD (approx €80). I haven't tried the 18-year expression, but I can only imagine how great it is. As long as they keep producing top-quality whisky, there's no way their prices are going down.
I really love this malt. Tasted both the 12- and 18-year-old at the distillery, and came to the conclusion that this younger bottling has a much better VFM than the (superb) Yamazaki 18. I grabbed 1 bottle of the 18 and three bottles of the 12. Now that prices for Yamazaki 18 are hitting 500€ (compared to 100€ for Yamazaki 12), it's has become rather easy what bottle I choose...
You won't be disappointed, Nikka From the barrel is very good, but the flavor profile of the Pure Malt 17 yr is an explosion of flavors, complex and extremely well balanced.
@ Dreaming of Islay : I'm from Montreal myself, have seen the "Big In Japan" bar, but have never been. Now that you mention it, I should make my way there soon.
@ Mashtun Mike : I'd like to try the Nikka Taketsuru Pure Malt 17. I tried the Nikka From The Barrel a few months ago and was really impressed.
Very lovely whiskey. In 2015 I went to a bar called Big in Japan in Montreal where the bar literally was decorated with hundreds of bottles of this, and customers could even buy a "personal" bottle that'd be placed on the shelf and be for their own consumption. That place was like my magic kingdom.
Had this last night a dinner with friends, along with the Nikka Taketsuru Pure Malt 17, both were a huge success.
