Green Spot Single Pot Still
Single Pot Still — Ireland

I've been on a bit of an Irish whiskey kick as of late. Maybe it's the summer weather, maybe it's the increased number of quality Irish offerings on the market, maybe it's just been time to switch things up. You can't, of course, consider Irish whiskey without taking a look at Green Spot. I first tried it some time ago back at my favorite neighborhood Irish pub back in Chicago. I liked it then, quite a bit...so I was curious to see how it held up over time. The good news is that it held up quite well, even if I would not call it my favorite single pot still offering. I typically expect my single pot still whiskies to be heftier, richer affairs than this; Green Spot feels like a lightweight compared to, say, Redbreast or Powers John's Lane. That being said, the trademark notes are there with some delicacy and finesse - a pinch of spice, some freshly toasted bread, vanilla, a hint of citrus, that little bit of slight green bitterness that comes from the unmalted barley. It's a more bourbon cask forward style of single pot still; while that's hardly a bad thing, it's not quite up to the standards set by some of the other single pot still whiskies out there. Its youth also shows through; at 7-8 years, Green Spot lacks a bit of the finesse and depth that more well aged whiskies possess, which is a real shame. If you want that, I suppose you're shelling out for Yellow Spot - that's a bullet I have yet to bite. I happily drink Green Spot, though, and it's not a bad starting place at all if you're keen to explore the increasingly diverse world of Irish whiskey.

I have yet to try RB Cask nor the 15. And for that matter, the 21....but look forward to it, each of them.
@Scott, I got it for the same price, ballpark. I have no reason to complain on that front! I picked up some Redbreast 12 year Cask Strength, so I'm looking forward to getting into that bottle and giving it a review soon! I like the standard 12 year bottling, though I've had some inconsistent experiences with it. The 15 year, though...that one is an Irish national treasure.
One of my top choice in Irish Whiskey (the other being Redbreast). Reasonably priced for about $55+ (at least near me).
It was quite hard for me to find, I had to buy it abroad on a recent travel. Looking forward to try it!
If I can find it on sale, I think I'll have to snap it up. I hear nothing but good things about it.
Yep, give Yellow Spot 12yr a try! 46% ABV should definitely help to get a richer experience.
