Well, was not expecting to drink Lagavulin today. Wanted to get a bottle of Dalmore 12 for the whisky vault livestream (great youtube channel btw), but my store ran out. So I got a bottle of this stuff here instead. Not sure if that was a good idea.
The smell is smoke, peat, charcoal. Kinda earthy and with a hint of the salty sea. Also, BBQ. Because I'm hungry.
The taste is a load of peat and smoke and bitterness. I really, really hated this at first, but after I've been sipping this for about half an hour now it's kinda growing on me.
I get very little sweetness, but there are some pear notes in there, salt, smoked meat, a very weird aftertaste that reminds me of chicken wings. Also, some vanilla.
I do get a somewhat minty aftertaste and there is some sweetness.
I can't really describe it, but the aftertaste is worth fighting through the peat wall that smashed against your head at the beginning.
Still prefer the Laphroaig, but this goes up to the top of my list.

My first experience with Lag 16 was a bit disappointing as well. But subsequent glasses have changed my evaluation. Don't know if it's me or if a little oxidation is good for this dram, but either way it has become one of my faves. Nice review. Cheers!
