Nose: Figs, dates, malt, vanilla, sherry, cinnamon, caramel toffee. After developing for a while in the glass an oak aroma arises. There's a hint of sulphur but it's not too intrusive.
Palate: A luscious and sweet arrival with a deliciously creamy mouthfeel. In the development there are dried fruits soaked in sherry - plums, dates and figs again, this time drizzled with mild honey. Dark and hefty Christmas pudding, rancio, toasted almonds, hazelnuts, mild spices, baked apples, orange, cinnamon.
Finish: Long, slowly fading into a sweet memory. The single fault I find is right at the finale where there is a sulphur note (stronger than that on the nose) and it spoils the party by staying too long after everyone else has left.
While the nose is fruity right from the start with a background of good sherry emerging later, the palate is the opposite. First there is a wave of sweet sherry which then expands into fruitiness on the palate. The texture is the crowning jewel of this whisky - creamy, almost oily rich.
It swims well, with a little water opening up the nose and palate. This emphasizes both the sweet and spice characteristics and dispels some of the sulphur that you notice throughout this whisky. It does, however, undermine the texture. It's a pity that the trace of sulphur in the finish leaves a lingering musty, faintly sour taint in the mouth. Otherwise I'd rate this as 4 stars, but regardless I don't consider it value for money.

Not sure batch variation is in play here as many people have pointed to sulfur notes in the Macallan 12 sherry. I’ve heard heavily sherried scotches are prone to it, but again this one was the only one I noticed it with and I’ve have at least half a dozen different Macallans. I haven’t had the 12 in quite a while and would be curious to try it again and see if it’s still there, but I really didn’t like it enough to warrant another bottle. I’d rather get the 12 year Double Cask or a GlenDronach or Tamdhu (yes I know you didn’t care for Tamdhu but I loved it).
Strange that you should mention it :-) All the time I was tasting this it kept reminding me of another whisky, but for the life of me I couldn't place it. The resemblance was all based around that funky sulphur note. Sulphur doesn't often bother me - in fact often a trace, like in the nose here, is a good thing, but the off-note in the palate here is just too strong to enjoy. Maybe it's a batch thing?
Strange that you mention the sulfur. This was the first time I experienced that particular note in a whisky, and I’ve never noticed it since in anything else I’ve tried
